Geor First Moderator oi our origin we have barely begun. 1-'amers oi: Confederation could see rich in blossom and fruit. Our youth is I. reality only as years are counted. In wisdom and strength we are mature. I mean by that, that our particular origin and situation has given us a political wisdom and an economic stability far beyond our years. From Great Britain we inherit the incomparable boon at a free and I ponsible form of government. From our place be- side America we have enjoyed with her that tr . even fabulous. eoononuc growth that has smssed the world. And so we are proud, and justly so, oi what is ours. The dominant note of national pride which is genuine and legiti- mate is gratitude. To whom? To God, ior it is He that has given us all we have and made us all we are. There is a kind of national pride which is without principle and knows not God. It goes under the name of "nationalism" and is a dangerous perversion of the true order of things. for it. makes the state supreme. The tragic examples of this are painfully present to memory and to sight: Fascism, Nazilsm, Communism. These repre- sent national pride nun amuck, national pride which has lost the divine direction so necessary to keep it right. If we have God before our eyes, and are attentive to His law, there is no danger that our national pride will take a wrong direction. The thought of what He has bestowed on us should make us humble, not overbearing and self-righteous. That our nation is prosperous, and oc- cupies a place of rising importance is good reason for constantly giv- ing thanks. "He has not dealt so with every nation." That the red giant has not crushed our body and drunk our blood is due to His prov- idence. Freedom and Justice yet Temoln Ours: not to abuse, but to cherish grateiully. LL.D, (Copyright) TRUE NATIONAL PRIDE Eighty-live years of nationhood is not long in the history of the world and in comparison with the ages of other countries. We are young. When we consider the countries from which we took would be loud in praise and full of admiration. They would see that the small seed had grown into a great tree, beautiful in form, 0 hurch at Canada 600G40-69001 But it seems to me tint if the now the nation they formed they which our national pride might take it We are not careful. While we might be grateful to God for what we have. we might still fall into ii certain complacency, as thought there were no responsibility resting on us. We must never allow ourselves to slip into an enclosed selfishness that would cut us off from our fol- low men. St. John used very strong language about people who say they love God 'snd who do not prove it by loving their fellow men. And we would be liars indeed. were we to say we were grateful to God and not try to help those who are less fortunate. . Here are Weapons of far greater strength than marshalied armies or atom bombs: gratitude to God. love of neighbor. We tend to rate things by their physical size. rather than by the inner dyamism or their nature. And so an atom bomb is a powerful weapon. because it can spread death over so vast an area. But is not love stronger than death? Since the death of Christ, has not love conquered death? Love - posi- tive; atomic bombs are negative. Love is the source of life; atomic weapons the source of death. Men of wisdom know the difference. Let us not lose this vision, ”Where there is no vision. the people per- lsh." True love of our neighbor br- gins, of course, at home. But it must find its full scope in the world be- yond as well. The example of what we do in assisting the sutierlng. opening our doors to the helpless. standing firmly for principles of justice and right, playing a full part in the international scene. all these should be the overflow and natural consequence of love of neighbor and of genuine national pride. We cannot shut ourselves up against our brothers need. whether he he oi our nationality or of another. . . 0 When our country was coming into being eighty-live years ago. the founding fathers were casting about for a suitable motto for the new nation. One evening in his home one or them was reading his Bible and happened to come across these words, "He shall rule from sea to sea. and from the river unto the ends of the earth" (Psalm 71).
