ARE APPRllVEll; Combined B uildingl Repairing S u m' Totals Over $47,000,; 000- Nov. 7 —(OP)— ' OTTAWA, Mans totalling $24,695,268 have been approved tinder the Nation- al Housing Act and its predecessor, the Dominion Housing Act up to Oct. 31 last, a statement issued tonight by the Finance Depart- ment announced. Up to the same date loans for Home Improvement aggregated $22,319,546 making a grand total for house building and house repair more than 917000.000. The report was prepared at the request of Finance Minister Dun- nlng who, although he has not yet resumed his official duties which he was forced to relinquish by illness, was anxious to return to Ottawa to ascertain the extent to which the government spon- sored housing program was pro- ductive of employment. The housing loans up to the end of last month provided housing ac- commodation for 6.272 Canadian families and the home improve- iment loans enabled 55,820 famil- ies to improve their dwellings. The statement ated those loans had made sible an expenditure on building construction rincludlng land) of more than 553000.000; The statement continued: "It is usually estimated that at least B0 per cent of the cost of house building construction and modernization is spent, either dir- ectly or indirectly, on wages of labor, skilled or unskilled. Applying this percentage to the aggregate figure given above itis estimated that the loans made possible by Dominion legislation have accounted for payments of l wages to Canadian liiborof over 542000.000. Number of housing units financ- ecl in the last three months with comparative figures for corresp- onding months in i937 in brackets IOIIOWC August 254 (186). Septem- ber 338 (134), October 361 (194). For the three months period the increase is 72 per cent in amount of loans and 85 per cent in num- ber of family housing units financ- ed as compared with the some period in 1937. The figures October" are particularly encourag- ing in the indications they give of the outlook for more active build- ing operations during the next building season. The number of individual loans approved in Oct. was higher than in any other single month to date. During October 807 loans were approved in the amount o! $1,- 269,009. and provided housing ac- commodation for 361 families. The previous high month for number of loans was July, 1938, when 285 loans were approved. for 2 Norene Aulcl. Norma Willis, John Glow, Green. Joyce Willis.
