It only remains then for the rank and file of the people to make their modest but all-lmport- ant contributions to insure that the drive will be th success hard-working men at the hope it will be. . those helm C O The introduction of Little gue baseball in Summerside is, we think. the greatest counter-mea- surc against juvenile delinquency ever attempted here. It brings .V01m8 buys into the wholesome circle of sport at ages when evil influences can be expected to start their insidious work. The sight of those youngesters on opening night marching through the streets in their bright new uniforms was something that should be remem- bered as the beginning of a new deal for the small fry. We have wached them practising under their adult coaches, and have not- ed that their little selfish desires are being held in check by those men who lead them. Children at that age, if allowed to organize their own games, can be tyrannical and unfair. The restraining hand of adults is good for them, and they submit. and learn more read- ily because they know those coach- es are working to see that they have a. lot of fun. in . men- 0 We thought we detected a small retrograde movement in the man- ner of asking a question in Eng- lish in the Entrance Examinations. For some years now, the word "purse" has been relegated to the discards. and it does not appear at all in many modern grammars. Instead, the examiners asked the candidates to give the part of speech, the class or classification, and the relation of words in sen- tences. It seems only fair that the question should be in detail in this way, but this year, the word "parse" came back into circulation, with no further breaking down for pupils who may not have been familiar with the word because it did not occur in the book prescrib- ed for study. We could ask a pupil to give the orthography of the "pencil" and stick. a lot of pupils, but if we asked them to spell "pencil" we'd get a. much better idea of just how many could act- ually spell the word. Outstanding. concert At Alherton --A variety concert of outstand- ing merit was presented at Al- herton hnll Thursday evening when some of the best local tal- ent was assisted by Rev. L. M. Murray and a portion of his jun- ior choir from Kensington. Under the auspices of the United Church Ladies Aid, the program was ur- rangcd by Mrs. Herbert. Matthews. Mrs. George Ramsey and Miss Mabel Fielding. Rev. Mr. Murray, a talented musician, has trained a Junior choir of twenty-three members who won acclaim at the 1952 Prince Edward Island Muslcul Festival. From this large choir the six girls selected to visit Al- berton were: Margaret Murray, Barbara Parker, Myrna Cousins, Jean Murray, Irene Cotton and Elizabeth Brookins. They were heard in two and three part group singing, in duets and solos, and also presented two humorous skits. These girls who delighted the ears of the audience, were also pleasing to the eye as they appeared first in evening dress. later in afternoon dress and fin- ally, for a group of sacred songs, in maroon choir gowns with white surplices. Rev. Mr. Murray”: four-year-old son, Gordon, won the hearts of all with his sweet singing as did Chrlstcne Pickett and Peter Mac- Donald of Alberton, two other very young vocalists. Other local singers who are always well received included Misses Lona Hunter and Belle Wllkie who were heard to advan- tage in a duet and Miss Mary Glllis, Miss Ruth Jeffrey and Mr. Gordon Coffin who won hearty applause with pleasing solos. Miss Nancy Smith, in suitable costume, rendered a comic darky song which also merited the hearty applause given. Reading by Ralph MacArthur and John Pickett were highly sp- preciated. Accompsnists , for the evening were Miss Annie Leard, Miss Nancy Gillls and Rev. L. M. Murray. The chairman was Rev. A. R. Wallis. The proggam:- Reading, "The Optimist", Ralph McArthur.
