Captais Grindley is in command of the Naparins. - PLeuiscite iy Moxcrox.-~ A plebiscite of the civic electors of Moncton will be taken on Friday next to decide upon the issue of bonds for the erection of s new contral school building. It is a question between the erection of a new building to cost $35,- 000 or thereabouts and the expenditure of $7,000 or more in adding to and improv- ing the present structure, woich would not then be very suitable for the purpose, Tue Fisnertes.— By reports from the eastern section of the province it would appear that the best of the lobster season for this year isover. In fact some of the factories are about closing, many of the hands having already gone home. Codfish have not struck in yet ip large numbers though a few are being caught he.e and there along the coast. No mackere] vet except a few caught in nets. Fishermen at the Magdalen Islands, like our own, are being hindered in their work by usually cold wet weather. Tue Qveen’s Porrratr.—The portrait of Queen Victoria pnbiisned by the Mon- treal Star is out, and as was anticipated, is causing a genuine furore, A cablegram from London. There will not be enough of these Jubilee eou- venirs to go around for everybody wants them. _— ~~ - — Opera Hovse.—The Josie Milla Com- pany had a small house last evening when the comedy-drana “The Little Giant Mine” was put upon the boards. The play deals with life among the miners in the Western States, and the plot was cleverly unfolded. Miss Mills made a charm- ing Bessie Fairfax, and she was a prime favorite throughout, Mr. Thayer was also good as Alex. Fairfax. They were well supported by other members_ of the company. The specialties by Messrs. Macy, Mack and McEnary were received with applause and several: times encored. A matinee is taking place this afternoon, “Woman Against Woman” being the bill. “Twixt Love and Duty” will be piayed to-night. This is said to he the greatest of all society dramas, Miss Mills as Mercv Baxter, is said to excell. A bumper house may therefore, be ex~ pected. aide Hayxpsomg Fo_per.—Mr. M. J. The visitor is also told how to reach the playhouse from any of the railway stations or steamboat land- ings. .Keith’s Theatre is one of the sights of Boston, and no Charlotietonian visiting the city of beans and culture should miss seeing it. The trial of Private Dodge, of the 66th P. L. F., for absenting himself from drill, was concluded before Stipendiary Griffin yesterday. He was fined $5. The case is @ very interesting one to militiamen in- asmuch as the decision conclusively shows that enrolled militiamen must res- pond to tke call todrill no matter what their business engagements may be. Dodge is employed at the Electric Light Works, his business being to test the lamps, a very responsible position. It is his duty to test the lamps when they come in, and should he neglec: to do so the lighting of the city might be materially interfered wilh. He put in his twelve days drill as required by the reguiations. The drill which he was called upon to perform was called a “voluntary” drill, On the night in ques- tion .it was impossible for him to attend. Evidence to this effect was put in but the magistrate ruled that the regula- tions require him to attend all calls to drill and fined hira accordingly. Militia- men say the result of the trial will act as adamper on militia aspirants.— Halifax Chronicle.
