; : What the Pingers Testify. White hands and rosy palms, so be- loved of our grandmothers, have gone out of fashion. The Amorican hand is smaller than the Koglish hand, buat the nails are not so handsome. It ivsaid that people with imagina tion are apt to have long, taper fingers aod beautiful finger nails. The good natured critis are said to) possess small well shaped nails, und and their handwritiog is somewhat angular. The American nail suffers from the dryness of our climate, as a foreign picture painted on panel suffers from the same cause, Diplomacy has a long, supple band and a beautifully-kept finger nail. The handwriting of a diplomatist looks like a snake crawling away. An aptitude for criticism is shown among people who bite their nails. These people are cynical and severe, uochartitadle and bitter; they write a small, cramped, illegible hand, The Chinese have finger nails so long that they could write with them. The tenacity of the Chinese nail, which does not easily break, would indicate that they have more lime in their bones than we have. The BHaglish nails are almost universally rosy and shell-like, and, cut to a rounded, slightly tapering point, kept always scrupulously clean. Theskin at the base is pushed back to show.the onyx, a little white half moon. The onyx of the fiagers nails is carefully cultivated and polished by the Creoles of New Orleans to show thiut that they have no black biood in their veins. ~No “matter how fair the complexion the valuable sign of pure blood is wanted to the octoroon if the onyx is clouded, —_ . ee” A Homily on Advertising. The teath time he thinks it might possibly suit somebody else’s case. The eleventh time he thinks he will ask his neighbor if he has triedit, or koows any thing about it. The twelfth time he wonders if the advertiserean make it pay. The thirteenth time he rather thinks it must be a good thing. The fourteenth time he happens to think it is just what he wanted.
