Domestic Section 0f Shipping Bill May be Proclaimed OTTAWA, Jan. 31—-P0lltlcal ob- crvers speculated today on a r- ment remark of Minister of Marine Alfred Duranleaa that the govern- ment was considering bringing in- to effect the domestic features of the shipping bill passed by Parlia- rn:nt last year and left unpro- claimed. The most important portion of the domestic section concerns cos- tol trade. Under the old law a foreign ship W05 forbidden to carry goods or passengers from one Can- adian port to another. The primary function of the Cereal Division of the Experimental Farms System ls to produce and develop, for use on Canadian farms, superior varieties of cereal grains, field peas, field beans, flax, hemp and buckwheat. This work naturally involves testing already existing varieties obi/aimed from different parts of Canada as well as from foreign countries with a view to de- termlnlng their comparative value uncler specific conditions. At the Station testing Varieties and strains of cereal grains comprises the majority of the work. The following paragraphs describe the method used at Charlottetown in conducting such tests. If large plots are used the number of varieties tested must necessarily be small. To overcome this difficul- ty, and make it possible to test many varieties on a comparatively small area, rod row plots were in- troduced. Each plot consists of five rows 18 1-2 feet long. The seed for these ls weighed up according to the size’ of seed and geTmlnatlOn with the result that every plot contains approximately the some number of plants. Al“, harvest tune the rows are trimmed to exactly 16 1-2 feet or one rod in length. To avoid mixing and competition between varieties the two outside rows of each plot are discarded and only the three centre rows are harvested. In an effort to overcome soil differ- ences every variety or strain is planted in at last four different iozatiorri and an average of the four plots is recorded. The DIOts are kept separate and carefully thresh- cd. Yields are recorded very accur- ately and worked out to an’ acre basis. Yields arrived at in this way may‘ not indicate accurately what tlon by making provisions similar to those in the shipping laws of tiv United States. Under it the pro:- tice of a U. S. ship taking grain from the hcad of the Lakes to Buf- falo and transshippllig into another U. S. boat to proceed to Montreal would be pzcvented. The rrw bill was strongly op- posed in parliament 12st session by Western Canada members. (Patriot Please Copy) very rciurn mlaht bc expected under »l‘icld conditions, but as u basis of comparison they have been found vcrv satisfactory. Thus a variety yielding an average of 50 bushels per acre in rod row plots over‘ a period o1 years will undoubtedly be superior, in yield. at least to one yiriilnc onlv 45 bushels per acre.
