Loxpox, April 25.—The fall of Larissa into the hands of the Turks is confirmed. Arness, Aprii 26.—A despatch trom Arta reports that the Greeks have captured Plaket. Another despatch says that Plaket and Pentopegida have been occu- pied by the Greeks after being abandoned by the Turks, who have also abandoned Kalitcia. Colonel Manos in furce has advanced beyond Pentopegida, on the road to Jana- nina. I. is reported at Arta that a rising has occurred in the interior of Epirius. Lonvon, April 26—What seems likely to be the last week of the war is entered upon today. Itis difficult, from the tangle of conflicting telegrams, to understand tne exact position of affairs following the Greek defeat at Laritra. Lonpvow, April 26.—Opinion here to-day is almost unanimous that the end is in sight and this view is probably shared by the Powers, as tuey are al~eady moving to intervene. It is believed that intervention wiil first take the form of a suggestion of armistice to which the combatants would no doubt agree. Since Saturday the British Foreign Office bas been in close communication with the otber members of the European Concert, Great Britain suggesting that the time bas now arrived for them to act. The French, German and Italian G ov ernments have already responded, offer in to agree, althongh the German Govern- ment adds as a condition that it wiil be necessary first to exact a pledge from Greece to obey the mandate of Europe when their mandate is again given. The British Foreign Office believes that the Greeks will give this undertaking, as the disasters which have overtaken them have demonstrated that Turkey still pus- sesses a formidable fighting machine,—a fact which must have a sobering effect upen the popular demand for war at Athens, and which will permit the Greek pation to climb down witkout disgrace, after a superb vindication of the personal courage of she Greek troops and gratifying demonstration of Hellenio patriotism. Church Evangelist: The Rev. Watson (lan Maclaren) gave some wise counsel on preaching in the course of a remarkably beautiful paper reai at Sion College, in the presence of a large numnber John of the Loadon clergy. The brilliant chronicler of Drumtochty lamented the lack of positive preaching in tie present day, and condemned the affable tolerance assumed by preachers, who either have formed no convictions of their own or who ; give forth an uncertain sound, because they are consciously or unconsciously atfected by the undecided spirit of the age. The Gospel, he maintained, is not to be treated asa series of opivions or good moral maxims, but asa bodv of positive truth. Our forefathers erred in being far to0 positive, for they could see in the D.vine mind things that nowadays would s'artle us; but that danger will pot recur again, if preachers will take Dr. Watson's aivice, aud speak positively about tke right things and in the right epirit, beirg careful at the same t mes to base the'r teaching on the proper grounds, ; 7+ o+e PERSONAL.
