After the brilliant successeswith which Lord Roberts inaugurated his c0ntr0l Of the operations inSouth Africa there has come a pause in ouradvance and in the gemml progress of the war which has I i d d is not relieved. These rapid successes were 101 lowed two weeks later by the occupation But very little apparently as u ac hold the Biggarsherg range. with D\1!1d¢0. Glencoe, Newcastle, the Northern wedge of Natal and all the nine passes by which a passage eanbe effected from Natal to the ` issnsvaai or the orange state., There has been practically no fighting in Natal since the relief of White and his little army was effected. This looks like inaction on Gen. Buller’s part. There may be the quite apparent to the general reader. In the Free State there was no doubt much to be done before an advance north- ward from Bloemfontein could be under- taken. Northern Cape Colony had to be cleared and the railway lines opened from the South to the Free State Capital, and the southern portion of the State had to be pacified and brought under control. We ‘were _ therefore prepared to wait for a time. We were not so well prepared to learn of Gen. Olivier`s escape to the north- ward, while so large a British force was present, and acting on interior lines might have cut him off. By making good his escape the Boer general has gained in prestige, not, we fear wifhout inflicting some loss of prestige ,on our own com- maniers. But what has followed within the past few days isas surprising as it is painful. Instead of capturing the enemy on the Basuto border, our forces have retired before him, in swift haste from Lady- ‘brand to Thabanchu, and thence to Bloemfontein, losing a battery of gims, a ,hundred waggons and 200 prisoners in ,the disaster. How all this could have happened almost in the presence of Lord iRobert’s great army, is something almost incredible. How moreover the water ‘supply of Bloemfontein could have been ,I cut off, and communication between that city and Kimberly have been severed, adds to our astonishment. Unless the situation is speedily so changed as to present an = entirely new face we must recast our toosauguine view of the early pacilica- 3 tion of the Free State. The forced retreat from Ladysmith westward and disaster on the way must lprove to some extent disheartening to our forces, but much more must it tend to restore confidence to the enemy. To the ignorant and superstitious Boer mind it will look very like a. fulfilment of Kruger’s scripture quotation that °‘one shall chase a thousand and two put ten thousand to flight." We feel the utmost confidence that the disaster will be re~ trieved and the enemy again driven back i and ultimately subdued, but until British ascendancy in the field is again strongly asserted and established a measure of im- atience will be felt throughout the mpire. mv” BABIES HAVE GROUP Nb disease comes sol suddenly and treacherously upon its victim as Group. HEART HUMBUG- It is fashionable wdéy to 1..... s new heart scare every 24 hours. The commonest symptoms of dyspepsia oi nerve trouble, such as palpitation, weak spells, loss of appetite and poor circulation, are magnified and dis- torted into serious signs of heart trou- ble, with the object of frightening the public into taking this or that heart remedy. Itla hundredth part of the heart trouble we hear about were real, the cemeteries would be filled in a month. A wrong ,construction is put upon common ailments in order to humbug the people into the belief that heart disease is prevalent, where as real heart trouble. which is so sadly and suddenly fatal wheniit does occur, is a rare disease. Lopsided arguments cannot convince an in telligent people. Iron is a. vital ele ment of the blood.
