NERVILSINES Stops the Pain- {i Su g g e st s Scientific Approach To Problem 0f Economic Troubles OTTAWA, Ont, Feb. 10—(By the Canadian Prom-Creation of a scientific laboratory where the ec- onomic system might be dissected in an effort to remove that malig- nant growth. depression, was ad- vocated in the House of Commons today by Alfred Speakman, U.F.A., Red Deer. He would establish a "national council of social and ec- onomic research," patterned after the existing Council on Industrial and Scientific Problems. The Government, said Hon. H. H. Stevens, was willing to give serious study to the suggestion of an economic council. It was pre- pared even to pass the Speakman resolution if it were made contin- gent on the ratification of the Government. The House debated the resolution until the 6 o'clock adjournment hour without reach- ing a. decision. It will go to the foot of the order paper, to be reached later in the session. The machinery already existed for a. scientific study of social and economic problems: said Rt. I-lon. Mackenzie King, Liberal lead- er. The National Council of Scien- ilfio Research might be enlarged and such questions as unemploy- ment. unemployment insurance and mail-distribution of commodities and wealth, referred to it for con- sideration. Organized science had solved such industrial problems as pro- ductlon, said, Mr. Speakman. The Dominion, in furthering that work, had created the National Council of Scientific Research. Ho asked why Canada should not establish a similar council to grapple with social, andeconumlo problems. A ready field existed with such un- solved problems as unemployment, general distribution and low com- modity values. Systomatlzcd rc- Jsearch mlizht {mo a key to um riddle of fleprcssion.
