: + en ee p~ en 5 eos It | Attention is invited to the little poem be- low. Itis brief and unpretentious, yet its beautiful and touching words will find their way to many a fond parent’s heart, grieved and sorrow-stricken because some love one has gone astray, and is now a victim of in temperance, leading a life of sin, regardless of consequences to body, a8 wellas to immor- tal soul, | If, sitting with this little worn-out shoe And scarlet stocking lying on my knee, 1 knew the little feet had pattered through The pearl-set gates that lie "twixt heaven and me I could be reconciled and happy too, And look with glad eyes toward the jasper Ben {f in the morning, whenthe song of birds Reminds us of a music far more sweet, I listea for his pretty broken words And tor the music of his dimpled feet, I could be almost happy though | heard No answer, and but saw his vacant seat, 1 could be glad, if, when the day is done, Andall its cares and heart-aches laid away, I could look westward to the hidden sun, And witha heart full of sweet yesrning say : “To-night Im nearer to my little one By just the travel of a single day.”’ If L could know those little feet were shod In sandals wrought of light in better lands, And that the foot-prints of a tender God Ran sile by side with bis in golden sands, I could bow cheerfully and kiss the rod, Since Benny was in wiser, safer hands If he were dead, I would not sit to-day And stain with tears the wee sock on my knee, I would not kiss the tiny shoe, and say, “Bring back again my little boy te me!” I weuld be patient, knowing ’twas God’s way, And that He'd lead me to him o’er death’s silent sea, ' But oh, to know the feet opce pure and white, The haunts of vice have boldly ventured in ! The hands that should have battled for the right Had been wrung crimson in the clasp of sin! And should be knceck at heaven’s gates to- night, I fear my boy could hardly enter in. A Solemn Fact. Queen Elizabeth’s table was always laid with the utmost solemnity. The mujor-dome entered the banqueting room with bis white wand, accom panied by one with the tablecloth. ed three spread, and after some further reverent kneeling they retired. In like manoer the major-domo led the man who carried the sait-cellar, the plates and the bre ad, when the performances on the knees were again repeated. Two ladies of title now entered, one a matron and the Other unmarried. These prostrated themselves three times, when the younger lady rubbed the plates rever- ently with salt and bread. After that came the yeomen of the guard,or ‘‘beef- eaters,’ each bearing a silver dish. There were usually four-and-twenty to a course. A gentleman received each dish, and after it was placed by him on the table, a lady taster took out a small portion and gaveit to the map who carried it in, to eat, in case it should have been poisoned. During the whole of these observances the prostrations were continued, just as if the Queen her- self had been present, and the trumpet- ers blew fanfures and the kettle-drums rolled. By this time the Qneen had entered her private room leading out of the banqueting hal!, and each dish was in turn carried in to her by an un- married laly; and placed on the table for Her Majesty to make her selection ; after which they were conveyed once mere into the great room,to be consum- ed by those who had the honor of din- ingat court. Throughout the whole meul the most reverential and solemn etiquette was rigerously exacted by all. — oe Sunlight. No article of furniture that will not stand sunlight should be put in a room, for every room in a dwelling should have the windows so arranged that some time during the day the sunlight may enter freely into the apartments. The importance of admitting the light of the sun freely to all parts of our dwellings cannot be too highly estimat- ed. Indeed, perfect health is nearly as dependent on pure sunlight as it is on pure air, Sunlight should never be ex- cluded, except when so bright as to be uncomfortable to the eyes. And walk- ing should be in bright sunlight. A sun-bath is of more importance in_ pre- serving a healthful condition of the body than is generally understood. It is a well-established fact that the people who live much in the sup are generally stronger and more healthy than those whose occupations deprive them of sup- lizht.— Herald of Flealth. ——- Special Notices. FROM THE SON: “vorc'c. te iss “Gentlemen: My father resides at Glover, Vt. He has been a great sufferer from Scrof- ula, and the inclosed letter will tell you what a@ marvelous eifect Ayer's Sarsaparilla has had in his ease. I think his blood mast have contained the humor for at least ten years; but it did not show, except in the form of ascrofulous sore on the wrist, until about five vears ago. From a few spots which ap peared at that time, it gradualiy spread soas to cover his entire body. [assure you he was terribly afflicted, and an object of pity, when he began "sing your medicine. Now, there are few men of his age who enjoy as good health as he has. I conld easily uname fifty persons who would teetify to the facts in his case. Yours truly, W. M. PHILLIPS.” FROM THE FATHER: vroac.ce ana a duty for me to state to you the benefit I have derived from the use of Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Six months ago Il was completely covered with a terrible humor and scrofulous sores. The humor caused an incessant and intolerable itching, and the skin cracked 80 as to cause the biood to flow in many places whenever I moved, My sufferings were great, and my life a burden. I commenced the use of the SARSAPARILLA in April last, and have used it regularly since that time. My condition began to improve at once. The sores havo all healed, and I feel perfectly well in every respect — being now able to do a good day's work, although 73 years of age. Many inquire what has wrought such a cure in my case, and i tell them, as I have here tried to tell you, AYER’S SARSAPARILLA, Glover, Vt., Oct. 21, 1882. Nours gratefully, HIRAM PHILLIPS.” AYER’s SARSAPARILLA cnres Scrofula and all Scrofulous Complaints, Erysip- elas, Eczema, Ringworm, Blotches, Sores, Boils, Tamors, and Eruptions of the Skin. King Cooking Stove, with the oven, end and hlning partially drawn out, as it appears while being cleaned. HE above Stove I invented and patented in 1876, and at the present time HUN- DREDS ARE IN USE, giving perfect satisfaction. A large number have been in contant use for eight years, and the repairs have been very trifling, in many instances none have been required. This valuable experience should be sufficient evidence of their durability, which is accounted for in the following :—It has, instead of a Linea Fire Box, two heavy Currugated Cylinders, which obviate the expense connected with all Square Cooking Stoves of being compelled to renew Linings and Grates, at least once or twice every year, The heat being radiated from the Cylin- ders to the floor, where most needed, overcomes a_ serious objection to all kinds of ordinary Coal Oookirg S‘oves. The Cylinders are situated directly under the cover holes, and a fire may be made in one or both, thus adapting it for use either in winter or summer, with equal sitietaction, besides effecting a great saving to fuel. I have also attached tho PATENT TELESCOVI® OVEN to all my Elevated Oven Wood Stoves, such as the Waterloo, Niagara, Star, &c , causing the thousands using them to exclaim— My Stoves are worth TEN DOLLARS MORE than the same kind made by other foundries. The trade and retail purchasers will please bearin mind the fact that. although ® great advantage is claimed for my own Oven above all others, they cost no more, and being the sole manufacturer and patentee, no other f.undry can supply.
