Up to 1758 Pa E. I, or as it was then called St. John Island was own- od by the French. The fall ot Louisburg involved the loss ot P,`E. L to the French, Gen Rollo then tcok possession; from him Rollo Bay was named. In 1760 it was createda separate colony. Gov. -Patterson was drst military Gov., Thos. Desbrisay was appointed civil Gov. In 1764 the Island was surveyed by Holland -and divided into 67 townships which were given away by lot. each one to be settled within ten years at the rate of one person to every two hundred acres of land, the persons getting these lots to pay quit rents for same. Very few of them ful- filled the conditions but held them in hopes of the land increasing in value. A notable exception was Clark who labored assidnously to improve the land and the condition of the settlers, even importing whole cargoes of live stock, provisions and clothing, and distributing them among needy settlers many of whom testilled to the goodness of Clark and his colleague Campbell. Clark settl- ed in New London where he -did business which be named after his old home Lon- don. A_n extract from one of his employ- ees.BrIJ.i. Chebnelhafterwards Postmaster at Chariot-tetown,shows that he had 60 men in his employ who with their families numbered 129. He continued his improve- ments till the outbreak of the revolution- ary war when a check was given to his en- terprise. Reverses came to him and though he had always paid his quit rents the Government seized _his lands. It was nothing new to travel 10 miles for a bag of potatoes. The homes were rude cabins built of logs with rude clay chim- neys and out door ovens also of clay .
