CAN IT BE BROUGHT ABOUT? So far, although the proposition of Mr. bo Horace Hnszard has been much talked a ut, noone has publicly attempted to, show that Dominion party lines areeither necessary or useful in our Provincial af- fairs. No one denies, in fact that the Province has suffered greatly, in both money and morals by pai-tyism; It would beeasy to show how the desires and 6. .nd 1: ‘wishes of the friends of honest, economi- cal government and of good measures. have been defeated from time to time -by partyism in our Provincial affairs. 'l`hat’s what our moulrlers a'e doing ,avi a of Trade and working together very harmoniously to promote our com- mercial and business interests. The Eoard| has admittedly effected a great deal for the beneiit of our City and Pro- vince; it has from time to time made in- fluential and effectual representation of our interests and requirements to both Conservative and Liberal Governments. And we think it will be on all hands ad- mitted that the Board has been and is far more influential for good than it could oossitiiy have been if its membership had been made up of~one party only, and far’ more influential for good than two Boards other made up of Conservatives exclu- sively could possibly have been. In fact the Board owes its usefulness to the fact that it deals with business questions on a purely business basis. It will be asked, How can the new or- der of non-partisan Government be begun? And it will be pointed out that we have now an Administration formed on party lines, and a Legislature whose members were elected on party lines. To this it may be answered that next yearn general election will fall due, and there are strong indications that a. general election may be held this year. There is now pretty near- ly a dead-lock between parties, and there- is a strong feeling that if the present Gov- ernment is to continue in power there must be a reconstruction. The time' is therefore auspicious for good and strong men of both parties to get together, form a platform and ask the approval of the electorate upon the personnel and platform for a non-partisan Administration. We believe the great body of the elect- orate seeiand feel that partyism has been the cursii of our local politics and is it y main cause ofthe difliculties which beset the right management of our Provincial aifairs. We have little doubt that a coin- bination of strong men associated toge- ther on a non-partisan basis, determined to manage Provincial affairs on sound bus- iness principles, could appeal to the coun- try with vastly better chances of securing general endorsaticn and support than either party alone could possibly have. J many influential men of both political parties who favor the adoption of this course, and the number is daily in- creasing. After the matter has been more fully talked over it would be desir- able that a number should get together and formulate a general plan.
