Accordirg to him a comet will strike the earth on November 13, 1899, and universal chaos and dissolution will be the inevitable result, To this bold statement equally eminent ecientists reply that the chance of the earth being destroyed by a comet is only about one in fifteen millions, They admit toat the night of November 13, 1899, will be remarkable, for the reason that the heavens will then be ablaze with a magnificent shower of stars, but they point out that a similar display of celestial fire- works regularly occurs every 33 years, and there is no reason for supposing that the spectacie in 1899 will be more glorious or more Ominous than it was in 1853 or 1866. —--_-—-—-— LOCAL NOTICES. Bie Potarors.—There is on exhibition at the Marshfield store by Geo. Burnett, Erqg., @ tample of potatoes grown on his farm, one of which weighs over 2 lbs. Making allowance for Mr, Burnett being an up-to date ecientific farmer, it surely ies happy criterion of the potato crop. Mr. Burnett in fermer years was a noted ex- hibitor aod prize winner at our Local Ex~ hibitions. But alas! Local Exhibitions seem to be athing of the past. A Va-vasLte Parent.—-Capt Frank | Gallant, Postmaster at Tignisb, will bave ov exaibition at Halifax next week a lock atiacoment which bas been patented in Canada, Great Britain, the United States, France, Germany and Belgium. It seems to us to be a perfect fastening for valises, trunks, etc, and for vaults, eafes and «lid- ing doors it no doubt will be in great demand. This morning we were shown the lock attached to the mail bag which certainly appears to be ite especial adap- tation. Instead of having a lock attached to a chain on one side of a mail bag, enda bar fastened by a strap on the other side,as at present,Captain Gallant’s patent brings the lock witbin the bar without lessening its strength and, in fact, further securing the mail bag—with less Jabor in closing it. We have no doubt that this outcome of the captain’s ingenuity will prove to bea grand sccess.
