The New York Bloomer Girls, Eastern United States lady chem- pions, reinforced with the appear- ance of two men players, a. catcher and short stop on their lineup, gave the Abegweits a bad scare yesterday afternoon, when they forced the lo- cal champs to extend themselves to 60D a 9 to 8 win after ten innings of hectic battling. Bunching their hits in the opening frame, and playing a, hundred pgr- cent offensive, the New Yorkers touched young Stevenson on the lo- cal mound for six hits and five runs before the half frame curtain. At the end of this half the smsll number of fans in attendance begun to move further to the edges of their seats, awakening to the fact that girls as well as men can plsy the great outdoor game, and that a walk-over for the home fry was any- thing but a miracle. The batting, base-running, and es- pecially the fielding of these visiting ladies was good to glimpse and some- thing new and very, yes, very novel in the history of the game in this Province by the Sea. And further still, much commendation is due to the two lady hurlers, Misses Demur- est and Ruth Doyle. This duet of flingers stuck to their guns through thick and thin. The former was yanked from the mound after slab- bing a great game till the sixth, when triples, doubles and singles proved too much. She was replaced by Ruth Doyle who had the Abbie batters guessing into snpextro inning, but big George Francis broke the game up with a. single and shattered the Irish girl's hopes for a well de- served win. Sha was credited with the lose, but safe to say. not a girl of her age (19) 1n the whole uni- verse could do more. She toed the hill after tho Abegwelts had scored six runs off Demarest, who weakened ‘st the conclusion of a faultless five 1 routes, and only allowed a. few paltry i hits for the remainder of the ten ‘frames. With the score tied in the ninth and tenth, Doyle faced a. try- ing proposition, a. corner in which hundreds of men hurlers have failed miserably. However, this young lady showed the pluck of the Irish and saw the "game" through-and smiled when it was over. ' Among the msny features of the Abegweit win yesterday was the bat- ting of Francis and the hurling of Gus McDonald, the latter being call- ed after s. five run lead was piled against’ him. MrDoncld showed gameness and courage to pull the wool out of the fire and win a. red hot set-to. It may be mentioned how- ever, that excellent batting and base-running by his team-mates was another great factor in the popular verdict. The New Yorkers leave this morn- ing for Nova. Scotia where they have a. number of further engage- ments to fulfill, after which they will return home, rounding out a 92 game schedule, in which they split about 50-50. Starting out on May 20th, the girls, with the exception of six postponed games, have played every day-truly s. record to shoot et—1-low about it local ladies? 1st Inning New York~condon works a pass, Rohr following hunts and is safe on the sacrifice of Gondon to second.
