The feeling of jealousy with which the ‘“‘Ashantee Ring” ef the less favored officers of the British army Was plainly exe. splitied by some} words of Col. Alexander iv the Hoase of Commons early last month. In calling | attention to the fact that sixteen of the officers. who had gone to Egypt had been allowed to retain their stail appointments at home, he said that such a thing was’! unprecedented in the annals of British military affairs. Yesterday the sec- tarians spread a report that 5,000 Rus- sians were on their way to Egyp? to drive out the English. These sectarians need ac iron hand. Examples should also be made of a few of the Ultra- Nationalists, who are hand-iu-glove with the sectarians. Second. The moderate Nationalists only fear that the Enoglish will go away too soon, leaving them at the mercy of the thieving, communistic city rabble instigated by the sectarians. Third. The ignorant, goodvatured masses, whole political aspirations are limited to the minimum of taxation, are delighted that all is finished, Europeans are coming inte the villages to buy cot- ton. The cheerful readiness with which the 4,000 soldiers at Tantah surrendered to General Alison with only 500 Gordon Highlanders, proves the joy of the fighting men to return home. The negroes under Abdellah Pasha surrend- ered Damietta somewhat reluctantly. The opinion of the enlightened classes here is that England is mortally bound to establish a strong Government. +i oe The Danger to the Canal. A correspondent of the New York Herald has been looking up news from the Egyptians. Officers in the Egyptian army told him the following :—Upon receipt of Tewfik’s decree dismissing Arabi the Chamber of Notables decided that only the Sultan could proclaim him a rebel. They accordingly telegraphed three times to Coristantinople, but received no reply. Af # council of war heid on the Sth of August, fearing. an aitack from Ismailia, it was decided to destroy the canal. There was ‘much discussion whether it should be destroyed at once or whether it would be better to wait for an act of hostility in that diree- tion. In the meantime engineers were despatched with torpedoes to Kantara, Serapeum and Chaloof. Mahmoud Felhmi stronglyurged the immediate destriic- tion of thes@amal, but this was opposed on M de Besseps guatanteed | 1 ‘gc scertainly saved the n ferable damage, The| torpedo parties were only withdrawn ten | hours before Sir Garnet Wolseley arrived at Ismailia. - ——o War on Lesseps. England, having conquered Arabi, is now being urged to declare war upon M. Ferdinand de Lesseps. A very bellicose amiele was published lately in the London Times asking how he dared to exercise over the Suez Canal athe su- premacy which Denmark once claimed to exercise over the Sound. We advise the British to be cautiouss M. de Lesseps is a far more formidable foe than Arabi: He could take the field at the head of a compact little body, which would chiefly consist of his wife, his son Vietor and some of the fighting editors of Paris. He could carry his transport with him in the train, whether in the baggage wagon or underthe seat of the carriage. He could raise a loan for war expenses by announcing a bew engineering enterprise. Possibly he would not in the end prevail against the invincible Wolseley, but he would certainly show more fight than Arabi aud the Egyptians.—N. ¥.
