However. if a few aphids are pres ent in a crop and the weather re mains hot the number can in- crease rapidly to a danger point in a day or so. if the weather re- mains cool aphids are unlikely to become a serious pest. Spraying or dusting should not be consider- ed if the grain has headed out due to the damage done to the crop by the spraying or dusting opera- tion. if the crop has not headed out, action should be taken when the numbers reach a dangerous level. Spraying recommendatlo are: a 25 per cent Wettable Powder Mal- athion at the rate of 2 pounds per one hundred gallons of water. or I 50 per cent Malatliion emulsion at the rate of one and one-half pints per acre to one hundred gallons of water can be used. Both of these should be used at the rate of one hundred gallons of water per acre for best results. For dusting a 4 per cent Mala- thion Dust the rate of no to 25 pounds per acre should be used. The material will be cheapest for s spraying operation using the 25 per cent Wettable Powder. NEW WEED One of the worst weeds to come to the attention of the Department of Agriculture in recent years is Woundwort or Stachys paiustris. This weed is similar to Hemp Net- tie or the mints. it is perennial. square stemmed plant growing from two to three feet in height. it is identified from Hemp-Nettle by its creeping rootatalk bearing underground stolons ending in whi- tish pulpy tubers. Because of these tubers it cannot be controlled by cultivation as these break up. each part sending up new plants in the following year. This plant is found in grain. hay and pasture fields. in grain. top growth can be con- trolled by MD ester at the rate of 6 oz. acid equivalent per acre. If the grain is heading out. this ap- plication will result in damage to the grain and any clover that may be undersown. Dsiapon is being used on this week at the rate of low pounds per acre. but results will not be available for some time. Further information on this weed may be obtained from the Provincial De- partment of Agriculture, Boa IM Charlottetown. it would be appreciated if those identifying or suspecting this week would send samples to the Depart- ment for identification in order that some idea of its extent Qualltyafhayisevsnnioreim-i psrtant thalnuaatity although far mars must match one with the other.
