(The Dominion Illustrated. ) lhe appointment of a Minister of Agri- culture in England may tend indirectly to promote our phosphate industry. As we have already pointed out, Canadian phos- phate of lime has of late been attaining a high rank in England. Formerly, it ap pears, it fell somewhat into disrepute through lack of care in preparing it for shipment. The usage now is to free the mineral from adhering substances, such as “uelss, pyroxenic ruck, iron, ete., and this treatinent has been found so advantageous that it well repays the additional trouble. Canadian phosphate now takes rank in the English market as the best in the world. A sample exhibited at the Cincinnati Cen- teunial Exhibition weighed 870 pounds, and was considered the largest ever taken from amine. Its purity was no less re- markable than its size. In color it Was a rich green. It was said, moreover, to be a fair sample of the whole mine, which is in the tenth concession of Loughboro, Fron- tenac County. The vein from which it was taken was computed to be from six to six- teen feet in width and seventy feet in length ; but the length increased with the depth of the working. For many years phosphate workings were not carried deeper than from thirty to fifty feet; but now there are places where mining is conducted as much as a hundred feet below the sur- face, by means of galleries, which follow the spur or branch veins. This is un- doubtedly destined to be one of Canada’s ¥reatest imdustries ; but no delay should be risked in taking advantage of new out- lets for the trade. <> + <a Personal. tev. Father Biggs, af Halifax, is very ill from the effects of a cancer in the eye. Hon. John Costigan, Minister of Inland tevenue, Ottawa, arrived here Monday even- ing. He left again this morning. Mr. G. 8S. Moore, accountant of the Bank of Nova Scotia, Amherst, has, with his fam- ily, been spending his holidays with his friends in Charlottetown. They returned this morning, The Wesleyan Theological Society, of Ottawa, have appointed Wm. Ayers, B. A., of P. KE. Island, as their missionary to Japan. Mr. Ayers leaves for Yokohama shortly. The society defrays al! expences, The Rev. W. W. Brewer, who has been un- able toenter upon his ministerial duties in connection with the Second Methodist Church owing to severe illness, is very much im- proved in health, and will arrive here from St. John to-morrow evening. Capt. Walter Rowe, of this city—son of Mr. J. T. Rowe—is now master of the trim little brigantine Topaz, sailing out of Halifax. His last voyage—the first in which Captain Kowe had full charge—was to Colon, in Cen- tral America, which port she made in the nn- usually short yw of twenty days, We trust € Mr. Ellis and his prisoner were passengers 9 COMEDIANS, DANCERS 95 to Bloomfield. On the way up the latter told some of the train hands that he would possibly get seven or eight years imprison- ment. This morning Landrigan was ar- raigned before Messrs. Ellis and Gorman, J. P.’s. The girl identified him as the man who assaulted her. Landrigan, how- ever, pleaded not guilty tothe charge. He was remanded for trial in the Supreme Court. The section of the Trainor Road, where the assault took place, has not been opeu very long, and thereare woods on both sides. There are no buildings on that portion of it. It was about midway in this wood, as it may properly be called, that Landrigan and his victim met. He accosted her, and asked if that was the right road to Minini- gash. She said yes, and passed on After she had gonea short distaace she looked around and saw that the man had turned back and was coming after her. She be- came alarmed and started to run. He ran after her and soon overtook her. His next move was to catch hold of her and knock her down on the road, as above stated. Local Notices. Kelly & Co., photo artists, beg to announce that owing to the opening of their Halifax studio, they will only remain in Charlotte- town a few days longer.
