After Hattie Wummer had nestled down in the easiest chair she asked her chum Kate whether she re- garded a girl bound by her promise to marry. *T suppose it is according to the point of view. If it transpires that the young man is utterly unworthy, I presume it is right to drop him. If convinced that he would not prove compatible, it might be justifiable to let him down as lightly as possible. But I’m not up on the law and am rather inclined to think that moral obligations are not considered particu- larly binding in this connection. Have you a special case to present?” “In strict confidence, yes. I promised to marry Jack Dasher. I’m not cer tain that I ever loved him, but that pernickety Miss Dubly was after him and I just wanted to show her that there are others. Of course she had the nerve to fling her head right at him, but I did what Jack called a fine piece of interference and she was left.” “Tinfer from your slang that you gratified your pique by cutting Miss Dubly out and that you are now ar- ranging to throw Jack over.” ‘Precisely, my dear.” “It is heartless and unprincipled. She is a noble girl and he is one of our ” petite manliest young men. “Oh, very well, if you are going to take the matter so seriously. Bat how many young men have you jilted, Miss Kate?” *‘None except at the summer resorts, where it is sanctioned and expected. "No evyasions, now. How many ‘such scalps do you boast?” ‘Ten or a dozen. But that is en- tirely a different matter. You have cruelly wronged two of our own set. I will tell you plainly that I will make my best effort to console Jack after you havedone what you cay to wreck his happiness. Poor fellow!” “Oh, that’s the way the wind sets. Well, I'll tell you just as plainly that I've changed my mind, You needn't worry your little head about consoling my fiancee. Jack is a dear old boy and we are engaged. I defy him ta -annulthe contract and will make life unendurable to anyon@ that tries to «come between us.” Sympathy. God pities the poor sinner. Pity is ‘what is given by the superior to the inferior. This is what comes froma lofty plain to the man on the low plane, It was not so with Jesus Christ. He did not simply pity the poor sinner while he rezained in heaven, but he came down to earth and gave the sinner sympathy. Sym- pathy is what we give when we place ourselves in the place occupied by the one with whom we sym): athize. Exhibits His Wives for Money. A harem is now on exhibition in Ber- lin. A Persian Pasha, who was bank- rupt, was induced to sacrifice his ideas of the proper seclusion for a Mahome- tan family for a consideration, and he has moved his goods and chattels to Berlin, where they may be inspected by the curious. The house has been arranged so that without disturbing the inmates their home life can be seen. The Pasha exercised good judgment in the selection of his wives and many of them are of rare beauty. There are a score of children, ranging from four to sixteen years, and a dozen female servants. Many of the wives are ex- cellent musicians and play the piano and sing remarkably well. They also do fine needlework. ‘They have be- come accustomed to the stares of strangers and pursue their usual household vocations as unconcerne dly as if in Persia. The show will visit all the large cities in Europe and may come to America. A VERY STRANGE CASE, Miss Helen Beers Who was Born Blind Has Her Sight Kestored, Miss Helen Beers, of Newiown, Conn., was born blind fifty years ago, and ov Satarday last for the first time in her life she was able tosee. Many occulists have said her case was hopeless, but a short time ego she came under the observation of Dr. li M. Wilson, of Bridgeport, who is on the staff of the ‘Manhatten Eye aud Ear Hospital,of New York. Aftera careful study of her case he believed that ap Operation would restore her sight, for he considered it to be a particular form of congenital cataract. The operation was performed by Dr. Wilson in the presence ofa large number of surgeons at the Bridgeport Hospital. On Saturday afiernoon the bandages were removed for afew moments, and Miss Beers became wild with joy when she found that she could see perfectly well. Sie utterly fa:ls to recognize objects she her life. has handled al) not tell a bouguet of She could flowers, and only when she shut her eyes and felt them with her fingers did she know them to be roses, Neither did she know achair until she put her hands upon it.
