Roberta Lee i ' MIXED FARMING. . T is as yet too early to conclude ‘ that there is little hope for a. fav- ,crable potato market this season. ‘Fears are expressed, however, and lihc very fears indicate the uncer- ltainty attached to the potato mar- ,‘ ket generally. Much money has been made on potatoes in recent years, jbut there have been occasions on {which little profit accrued to the i potato growers; and this uncertain- ty will always accompany the potato business. To a largc extent potato farming is a gamble, and gambling is always uncertain. The Guardian has always con- sistently maintained that for an ag- ricultural country likc ours mixed farming is the only safe method. Potatoes may be grown in fairly large quantities, and for reliable seed potatoes there should always be a reasonable expectation of fair- ly remuncrative prices. But to glvc up any other line for the sake of potato growing ls simply to put all the eggs in one basket. Dairying is the corner stone of agriculture in this Province because along with dairylng we have the _other two graces, namely, poultry and hogs, each a complement of the other. Those who have adhered this system have made a success of it and it is quite safe to assume that it_ will always prove successful. There is amunlimited market for the products of the dairy, poultry and hogs. The dairy herds may be extended so as to include beef cattle and there is always a good demand and good prices for good sunk of this kind. We would strongly urge upon our farmers to adhere to the I general principle of mixed farming. There is no gamble ln this. Liberal leaders in Nova Scotia are talking loudly of the extravagance and in- compctcncc of their predecessors who are now seeking re-election. In view of the record made by the Liberal party during its more than thirty years’ occupation of the seats of the mighty. their present charges must sound very rldiculuos to the people of that Province. When the Liberal party was almost entirely swept out of office in i925 their re- cord was summed up by chartered accountants as follows: "Our investigation has revealed that the finances of the Province are in such an unsatisfactory condition as to demand strong and immediate action in order to remedy the con- ditions which now exist." And again: “The records which have been kept, were incomplete, inaccurate, and wholly inadequate for recording the transactions of the Province." The chartered accountants who gave this statement were P. S. Ross a Sons. Their qualification for the undertaking may be gauged from the fact that the firm has since been selected to audit the accounts of the Dominion Government. --~---~-<-e>»__ W.“ ' EDITORIAL NOTES. 3 egg yolks, 3 tablespoons fiour, V.- tcaspoon vanilla, 1 tablespoon sugar. The battle was fought the 27th of May, 1813, when an American force landed at the town, and captured it, destroying many of its nurses.
