March 3—Encour- aged by development; suggeting the avoidance of serious labor dif- ficulties in the steel industry, the Industrial Section of the market , made an excellent showing yester- day. The steels provided the chief buoyant note at theoutset but, as the day progressed the important automotive group swung into ling to show large net gains on the day in the two leading motor stocks. The change of tone in this group groin the dragging state of recent weeks was a factor which improv- ed the tone of the entire list. An exception was the utility group which remained relatively sluggish. The improvement of the rail group was not unanimous but the Dow Jones Rail average- closing at 58.90 now is within striking distance of Livestock MONTREAL, March s-rcrid Livestock traders met one of the smallest markets of the year in eB-Plv declines today with ‘cattle market unestabllshed along with sheep and lamb division. Sale Alta, March 3—A ford across the North Saskatchewan river here which has provd- a death trap for nlnny whit people but Whloh 1185 been known to Indians for hlllldfvdfi of years is still used in “ill-be- tween“ seasons, the period of the year when tile government ferry is ullabe to operate and it is ilot safe to negotiate a crossing on the icc. The first recorded crossing of the ford was in 1714 when a white set- tler was killed and his faillily cnr- ricd off by Indians. Ill the early years of this ccilt- ury it proved a profitable propo- sition for Indians who often hired out to guide incoming settlers scram the swift stream. Tile ferry was put in in 1909 but encll spring and fall there rcmnilis the three weeks "in-between" sell- tsoll. Low water at freeze-up hast made the Crossing less dangrous for people crossing at that season. In the spring it becomes the tricky venture it was in the days of the fur traders.
