<< OO TN } owe — } Starving in Silence. An extraordinary case of attempted suicide with the aid of charcoal has jast come to light in August last a Miss. C. M. Fitte took unfurnished rooms with a Mrs. O'Brien and breught with her Mrs EK. A. Jones, a sister, and Alice, her own daughter, twenty-nine years old. They lived very secluded, most of their time being spent in their own room, and the only sounds | heard from them were the reading of the | This | Bible and occasional continued until Mrs. quite accustomed to them. night the 9th inst., however, it was ob- served that the three women were un- usually still, and Mrs. O’Brien noticed a strange odor coming from their room. Thiswas emitted from burning charcoal, although Mrs. O'Brien did not at the timo what made her cough so prayers. O'Brien became violently when she climbed up and) called to the lodgers through the fan- | light. They, however, returned no anawer. In the morning the odor of charcoal was still more powerful, and Mrs. O’Brien this time managed to induce} the unfortunate women to speak. They answered her by asking her to go away, adding, ‘‘We are starving ; let us die in peace, please.” That was all. They refused food and declined all efforts toward communieation. The landlady went away, and not until at 9 o'clock in the evening were the police called in. They then had to break the door open | where the} in order to epter the room determined wemen were. doctors with them and, fortunately, were not to late. None of the women were abie to speak and ali three were emacis- ted by starvation, Whee <he had recovered sufficiently, Alice said they bad come from Barba-| does ; that they lived four years in New York, and had earned $1,000 at dress- making. She also seid that they were persecuted by an enemy, whose name she would not give, and fled to Toronto, where they lived a year and twe weeks. The enemy followed them, however, aud then they came to Mon- treal, where ‘hey have lived since August on $100. At present thre are hopes of their ultimate recovery, which will be necessarily slow. no The Origin of Musquitoes. The Indians have a vory satisfactory account of the orivin of the Montezuma musquitees. Tie legeniruns thus: There were in times of old, many mouns ago, two huge feathered monsters per- mitted by the manitou to descend from the sky and alight on the banka of the¢ Stor Where he is prepared to wait apon bis Seneca River. Their form was exactly that of the musquite. They were so large that they darkened the sun like a cloud as_ they flew toward the earth. Standing one on either bank they guarded the river, and stretching their long necks into the canoes of the In- dians, as they attempted to paddle along the stream, gobbled them up, as the stork king in the fable gobbled up the frogs. The destruction of life was so great, that net an Indian could pass without being devoured in the attempt. It was long before the monsters could be exterminated, and then only’ by the combined efforts of the warriors of the Cayugas and Onondaga nations. The battle was terrible, but the warriors finally triumphed, and the mammoth musquitees were slain and left un- buried. For this neglect the Indians had to pay dearly. The carcasses de- composed, and the particles, vivified by the san, flew off in clouds of mur- quitoes, which have filled the country ever since.—Wm. F. Taylor, in the Manhattan. a -—— —_——— a —<— Had a Diamond at Home. “So you want a position as clerk, do you ?” asked the proprietor of the ho tel ofa dapper young applicant, “Yes sir.” ‘*Have you had mueh experience?” “Ob, yes, sir. I bave been connect- ed with a great many of the large hotels, and can give the best of recom- mendutious.”’ “Well,” said the landlord, “we want a clerk, but ” and hesitat- ed. **But what ?’ asked the young man. “You seem to have no diamond brenst-pin.” “Yes, have. I’ve got a bigone but I thought I wouldn’t wear it th's morn- ing.” “In that ease,” said the hotel proprie- tor, with a rlieved look, the position is at your service. I thought at first you had a diamond yet to purchase, and the way business is going on just now it might cramp me somewhat.”—Phila- delphia Call —_>-<—>- <a - Gems of Thought. Teers are the magic blossoms of the heart at parting, smiles at meet- ing. Many hearts ache with adoration of each other that meddlers and pride keep apart. Judge not the character of those you love by what others say, but by your owe heart, as jealousy is so natural to thehuman family, that to see others happy is misery. As the moon, whether visible or invisible, has power of the tides of the ocean, so the face of the loved one, whother present or absent controls tho tides of the soul.
