Miss Donkin is a native of Truro. N. The wounded, -the dying and those who died `en route, were brought tothe hos- pital direct from the firing line and the gruesome work of caring for them went on continuously day and night. Strenuous and harrowing as the work here was, Miss Donkin's most vivid recollection' of it all was the bravery, of the Belgian soldiers whom she des- cribes as "tliebrsvest people that ever lived." "Wounded to the death their- pluck and their courage never failed them; they had done their duty and the only regret ever heard expressed eltfher fordisabillty or approaching death _was _that their usefulness to their beloyed king and queen and' country was over. The Belgian people treated the nurses with every possible kindness. Necesssrily food wis scarce and prices exorbitant while luxuries of any kf\'l were generally speaking out of the question. The King and Queen, both of whom the people idolized, lived in La Penne and'fre-_ quently visited the hospital, shpwing every kindness both to the wounded and to the nurses. ‘Of the Belgian doctors, also, Miss Donkin entertains the highest respect Tltey are sklifuil patient, courageous Nothing daunts them and in many ca- ses effectedcures that bordered. on- themiraculous. . - - AT LEMNO8.
