On one side was an embankment rising above about 15 feet., and on the other side an embankment which would have precipitated the train down a distance of 15 feet.. Fortunately the locomotive did not leave the track, and before the other cars had time to lcnvo the tails altogether, the speed of the train had become veQ much lessened. This, however, had the eil'eet ot ending matters. For so long as the speed was maintained the engine remained in the same position that sho took when the accident first happened- pnrtly on the track,and partly on the loutside sleepers, the tender and baggage car following in the wake.
