I-IASZARD'S "GAZETTE. APRIL 15. r -. an... I uaezann-o aazaa-rm. Saturday. April to. tau Wu have noticed a seriesof articles in the Eu- ntnsr hooded "’l‘stn New Caeurn1'," In which there has been an attempt on the part of the editor to get up a sort of tableau: visartte — of course. in the caricature style—of the members of the new Eleon- tire Coonoil, _nnd wo—ehould have passed them over . with the contempt that they deservo—for we have long since known the little credit that le to be attached to the assertions of the proprietor and editor of the B:asttnsr—wore it not that it has been our good fortune to fell in with a picture, by the salon hand, of-the second of those who are thus honored, under the title of " The Leader," -— not “ the counterfeit presentment of two brothers." but of the some iden- tical person, not much above six years since, and it is amusing to oheorve what a diforenoo there is between the two liltenoeeee. drawn and painted by the same band. and after tho life. Ludicroos and provocative of laughter as the thing is, it is nevertheless attended with a degree of disguit and abhorrence amounting to loathing, at witnessing tho utter want of principle and disregard of tho common deooncieo and amenities of life displayed by tho author of these articles. We hear a great deal of the versatility and vonality of lawyers. of’ their saying one thing at one time, and turning round and asserting tho very reverse at ano- lllir. as they are retained; but in these cases the law- yer is neither deceived himself nor does he deceive others. Ile openly states, that he is of counsel for plaintifl or defendant, and that he is instructed to put bio client’: case before tho court and jury, and trusts to suhetantiate_ it by evidence, by which last the case In or ought to be decided. Very different, however, is the position in which tho editor of a leading journal is plaeed. lie is the historian of tho day; and tltottgll be may be tho advocate ofa party, and may reason- ably be supposed to take a one-sided view of the facts, as they pass before him, still be is bound to keep to the rule laid down by Cicero, " not to dare to say anything that is false. and not to be afraid to say anything that is true." We fear, ltewover, that tho Honorable Editor of tho Examiner has either never heard of Cicero‘: definition of tho duty of an historian, or conceives it to be a moot heathonislt doc- trine; for. generally speaking, his practice is tho very reveroe,—for he dares to say everything that is felon. and is extremely reluctant to say anything that is true, if it in the least rnalres for his opponent. There is another saying, fully as old no tho times of the Roman orator. and on well esteemed as to become no English proverb, intimating that those who deal in ficlion should have good-memories. It is extremely awkward to have one’: own previous sayings and writings on former occasions quoted in contradiction to those made ate more recent period; but it isa olroemstanco that ollen occurs in the career of men of the character of the editor of the Eaastinor. In 1341, when the Hon. Mr. Holl was appointed too seat in the Executive Council, the appointment was thus characterised in that journal :- "Tho Honorable John Myrio Holl was, on Tues- day last, sworn in a Member of the Executive Coun- eil, in th to‘ of the Honorable John Breckon, sod. “ Mr Holl is likewise a member of tho Legislative Council, and has ollen distinguished himselt in that y, by hie active and well educated mind. and b hie ihorsl and statesman-like principles. Hie stand- ing and respectability ore sulliciontly well known to preclude the necessity of rema on our part, or covil on that of our opponents." It woo the interest. at that time, of those with whom Mr. Whelau was connected, to endeavor to attach Mr. Holl to their party, and to secure the aid of his talents and influence in the Legislative Council; and the odi- tor for once felt the necessity of adhering to thotruth. He could not have drawn a more correct portrait of the hon. gentleman; and it is with much pleasure we roecue it from the oblivion into which it was fast descending, and present it to our readers as equally applicable to the some geutletnan on his reappoint- Iutent to the Eaecutivo Council in 1554. How the writer of the above paragraph could, only a few days since, make the following statement concerning the some person, will elicit some surprise in those who are not acquainted with the lengths to which party spirit, unrestrained by principle, will carry their pos- seoeor :— " Mr. Holl has been many years in the Legislative Couucil—-having been placed there shortly alter his arrival from England, not because he is a ntan pos- eeoeod of brilliant abilities or extensive influence in the country, but because, we believe, he was known to entertain at the time his appointment opinons favourable to the part then dominant and to the to rietary claae—eore y|rnenncod at that time by the Eon toro,—end to be well disposed to promote the interests of the proprietors was an infallible that he would not turn his back upon the I ootnpaet who held the reins of ollico. ‘Of Mr. lioll s aotecedonta before his arrival in the Co- Ieny, we have no authentic information. We are in , however. that his credentials of character to Sir Charles Fitzroy-the Lieut. Governor of the Colony at the time of his arrival—-were drawn up by a Metro Iitart Tailor of some repute. and that the honoreb e gentleman's family. or sotne of m at least, were in one wayoor other, at no distant period, eonnoctod with the norable and ancient trade of habit melting. A little wealth, . howovor—whetbor acquired in t is or any other way to of no consequence now—enabled Mr. oil to assume all the sire, all the pride and pontpnoity of a little Colonial aristocrat, who wornhlps nothing so doveetly as a balance at his houltor'e." We will leave our readers a little time to ootnpore theses, and teroloet on the credit rise to the asser- tioneet’ a-person capable of acting thus. we have not done with Ilr. Wbelan yet, nor with tho'reocaod leonteer of IM1, but reserve them for a fetus neutber. ‘rat show of Ileat in the train: of to-day. a heyeel all eoerparisoa, the least we have ever witnessed. Sir,—AIlow me to state, in answer to the Hon. Ir. Hensley‘: charge of melting an annonyurous and personal attack on him in the remark made by me on his speech on Savings Books, that nothing was further from my wishes or intention than to attack any one. My letter in your paper of the nth April, was writ- ten in defence of the institution of Saving: Banks, so generally and beneficially established in Scotland, and if I made observations in disparugetnent of his speech, they were made necessarily, consequent on the sub- ject, and certainly were not meant as a personal at- taclt on biru, which I could have no possible motive in making, and wlticltl utterly disclaim. Iultull offer only one observation on his explana- tion-Had the hon. gentleman applied a little of that modesty to himself which he so gracefully laviehee on me, and given. as quotations from Lawson, that part of his speech which is reported as delivered of his own knowledge, he would lrsvo enabled me at once to apply to his author those remarks which he is pleased to construe as personal to himself, for he could hardly have suspected me to detect the plagiarism. To p-event me being charged with another anno- nyrnoua attack on my hon. friend, if he will still allow use to call him so, I subscribe myself‘ Falconwood, ltth April. If Lawson’: Book on Banking is as far voide of the truth generally, as the quotations referred to, the following lines from Burns may be well applied to it : “ Some Books are lien, frac end to end, \Vhile eome great lies were never penned." .._..w_ Charlottetown Markets,AprIl 12. ad lloel’, (srnall) lb. 4d u 61 ; 'I'rtllow, u I0tl Do., by quarter, dtl n Md 1 Wool, 2d it In 3d Pork, Md it -ljrl j Ilntneapun, ytl. 8: 6d a be Do., In brl a 7d : Flour. pcrl . 8d Mutton, per lb. 4.l n 6.l 1 Oatmeal, per lb. 24] Liam _. rrmto l lit y, uualr. g 5..
