Made into Belts, Gard ` Gases and Articles of _ornlmentutlon Human skin, tanned and dy ed. and tl en made up into belts, purses, pocket- bt oks, ai d card cases, is a new fid that has broken out in SanFrancisoo, and ihe society wonicti of tho city by the Golden Gate :ire setting an entirely new fashion to their sisters in other parts of the world. '1`hesn novelties are rare, hard to pro- cure. :itil expensive. so that it is not likely that the use of huniun leather for ftniininc wear will become cotnmon_. Tle mere f;.ct lhatzit is uncommon nizekcs those who have ii fancy for the queer things all tlte more anxious to t pirciiie some article of the kind. When properly tant ed, human leath- er is sift. pliable, and has a close grain It can be dyed any color, and makes up beautifully. lf a person was told that it was ciilfskin one would think it was a beautiful piece of leather. -‘I attended ii high society wedding in ¥Frisco," raid a lady. reienlly from the West, “and ti-e bride. 'die.~Sed in the height ot fashion, wore a|silver-mounted belt of human hide. When the pair start ed on their honeymoon :rip .thc bride rarried in her hand a pure to match the belt. One of her bosom friends pointed out the articles and dwelt upon the fact that it was a. rare occurrence, but one that was likely to be repeated in the future. - ~~I was afterwards told that a number of the women piesent at the wedding supper also wore the same kind of belt- ing. This made nie think there must be quite a business in human .-kin, and with a friend 1 slartedtut the following day tg hunt up the tradesmen in this kind of leather. -‘There are medical students in abun- dance and the charity hospitals turn out many cadavi-rs. These bodies go out to the dissicting rooms ofthe medical cgl leges. The ro is nothing to keep the students from removing hu-man skin fn in a subject, If he has a lady friend he may tix her up with belt and purse, or he may sell .ht-. skin to some dealer for the price he paid for the pait of the body he bought for the purpose of se- curing a knowledge of surgery. In the latter he will likely get his money back in tull and thus get his experience cheap. ‘-The leading jeweler in San Francis- co told us his tirm had many special orders for this class of articles, and that any kind of clasp or mounting desired could be attached to the skin. The price of a belt in this way can be easily ,run up into the hundreds. When we said that I desired to leave an order we 'wi-,re politely informed that we would have to bring in the cured leather, as the iiirin preferred their customers to do 50 “We were directed by the jeweler to a. saddlery store on Market street about three blocks from the new ferry depot, and shown a number of pieces of tanned skin. The dealer made no bones about the fact that pe kept the article and that there was au incrtasing demand for hu- man leather. “The particular class of people who sought this leather are young society women principally. Some ef them are so delicate and refined-looking one would think they wouldfaint from the idea. But it is the fashion, and theyl are willing fo go through fire and water in their efforts to keep up with its va- garies. “The female skin makes up softer than the white male. A skin that makes. up beautifuly is that of the .african or Jamaica negro. This tans a handsome black and is much in favor. We saw ‘the skin from a niale Filipino which was unusually soft and pliable. “Any good tanner can prepare a hu- man skin, but few care to do it. Most. of the trade goes to a tanner out in the mission, who has done this york for doctors or students for the last twelve years. But the business is picking up since the women ihave ma_de a fad of human leather. As to the tune. it gel!- eially takes from s:x Weeks I0 BWO months, and sometimes a few weeks longer. _ ~'1‘here are several doctors in San Francisco who have instrument crises made from the skin of a human being. In justice tothe profession it can be said that the subject from_whom the material was obtained was either a hos- pital inmate at the time of h:s death or a corpse in a medical college. One of * the fine instrument cases we saw was made:froui skin taken from the back ot ii truckman who was shot in I M061 tight, and afterwards died in a hospiail in the mission. #-We interviewed a medical student 1 and found that we could get a splendid ed to take us into the dissecting-room l piece of human skin lor' $10. lie Offer# S. 8.
