Inquest Al Cardigan ls Concluded A coroner's jury at Cardigan last night decided the death of Allan Robertson, Fortune Bay. was ac- cidental, and said no blame could -be attached to either the dt'iver of the car or the Canadian National Railway train crew. Mr. Robertson, 50-year-old fish- erman. was killed instantly on the evening of Sept. 25 when a car in which he was a passenger. struck the regular evening passenger train backing towards Montague from Montague Juction. The accident oc- curred on the Lower Cardigan Road. Witnesses last night included Mrs. Chester Burke. wife of the driver cf the car, Mrs. Allan Rob- ertson. and Dr. G. S. A. lnman oi Montague who was also the coron- er. The inquest began last week and was adjourned to permit Mrs. Rob- ertson and Mrs. Burke to give evi- dence. . Last night Mrs. Burke was the first to testity. She said that whF.n the car turned on the Cardigan Raced and after proceeding only a short time. Mr. Burke had got out to clean the windshield. After pre- ceeding up the road farther sht- saw something coming from out or the woods and she screeched to her husband. , when the car was struck she WHS thrcwn out and landed on her hands and knees and remained there in a stunned condition, when she regained her senses she saw they had struck the train. She said that Mrs. Robertson -was thrown out before the witness. and that she had also seen Mr Robertson being thrown is-orn the car. she could not remember whe- ther she was clcse to Mr. Robert- son when she came to. One at the trainmen gave her first aid. She had not heard any whistle or sound to know the train was coming. She said the car was pro- ceeding at a slow rate and that they were too close to the train to stop when she noticed it. Mrs. Robertson gave practically the same evidence as the preceding witness. she said when she revived alter the crash she was lying partially across Mr. Robertson and could see the wheels of the train passing over his head. The: train stopped beicre sho arose mam where she had been lying ,on the road between the car and the train. Dr. Inman said that he had been called to the scene at the accident He iotind a man lying on the road with an extremely serious head in- jury. The man was Allen Robert- son. Death had occurred instantly The Doctor said he looked at the other persons involved in the ac- cident but found that they were in no serious condition. The police were then called and a jury impsnelled. The coroner's verdict Ind in part as follows: That on the 26th day ed Sept. 1960. at approximately 5.15 P.M at the railroad crossing. known as the mower Cardigan Road crossing. in King's county aforesaid, while being a passenger in In car driven by Chester Burke of my Fortune. came to his death by being thrown from the said car and being struck by the wheels or a C.N.R. train proceeding from Montague Junc- tion towards Montague. Neither the car nor the train were proceeding at an excessive rate of speed. but the driver did not see'the train noon enough at the crossing which was unmarked at the time. .
