His Worship Mayor Prowse thought the occasion was the proper one on which to.express his appreciation of the honor done him by the citizens of Charlottetown at the late election in placing him in his present high position. He also wished to con- gratulate the citizens on the present council; they _were an evidence-by reason of the fact. that every one of the old councillors who had offer- ed had been reelocted,-that citizens had confidence -in them notwithstand ing the scandals spread about pre vious to the election. A request from the Laborers’ Protective Union, that the City Council arrange for a nine-hour day 'or its employees was left with a :ommittee to be dealt with. On motion the City Clerk was in- itructcd to call for tenders for 10,000 feet of 2-inch hemlock p,snk; or lumber to be used in connection .vith the concrete work; for spikes ind nails und for 1200 barrels Port- lnnd cement. It was moved that the City Sur- /eyor be instructed not to put new ylank sidewalks down in the City unless the same is authorized by the .',‘,ouncil Board. With reference to a request from Salvage Corps for a larger allowance than th_ey at present receive, and also to a letter from the keeper of Victoria Park asking for an increase of salary oi $12.50 PGY month. it was resolved to let same lie on the table until the estimates utriictcd to advertise for tenders, in ,wo Nova Scotia papers, for 5,000 sons of hard- stone. ' ` ` ` ` A motion was passed authorizing- the placing of $10,000 more insurance _on the City market building. Itl was pointed out that at present the build- ing was only insuredlfor $15,000 and was worth $60,000, and there was only $3,000 at rest in the market house sinking fund. The tenders of Thomas Sweeney, James Doyle, _and J. Hughes for supplying sand for the City were on motion accepted.
