Hes:ruck agreat trv t) icapplies not only to black sheep among the bipeda, but equally to the wool bearer+ The progenitor of the flock answers for the next two or three generations. It has even been known that aram bas left his marke upon the flock for several genera tions, both for good and evl, Thus the ram is balfthe flock, and may be more. But the ewe is not to be neglected. She embodies the spirit of the sire in the lamb ; and as she is permitted to do it, she will succeed or fail in this vatural function [t will not do then to spend money in gett- ing a sire, and neglect the ewe, whose in- fluence for ill may spoil the good of the ram, then the ewe nee 8 to be helped to give full eftectto the vigourof the sire. ‘I'his igdone by feeding and general good care. But good care does not include any codd- log. Thieis not gocd for a sheep, which vants the pure breath of heaven to carry ofl the great amount of bodily heat concen- trated in the wool clothed carcases. The food of a sheep does not require so much carbopaceous matter as any other animal, 0» account of its heavy fleec*, by which it is protected against aloss of vital heat io- duced by the food. Oa the other hand, it needs more of the nitrogen, or flesh-forming elements of food, for the fleece has just the same quantity of these elements in it as the flesh and skin have. Here are the figures to prove this: Composition of flesh. Skin. Wool. Carbon, per cent....51°83.. 500 50 65 Hydrogen, per cent, 7°57... 70 ...... 7 03 Nitrogen, per cent, 1501..187 .... 17 07 | Oxygen, percent..21:37 230 .... 2460 | The rest consists of mineral! matter, sul phur, etc. This should be a revelation tothe ehep herd in regard tothe feeding of his flock. Let us compare the fleece with an eqaal quantity oflive weight. ‘The wool is prac- tically free from water, save a little moist- ure, while the flesh ba» 75 per cent. of it. Thus one pound = of _ wool may represent four pounds of flesh. Think of this wh-a we weigh a ram of 100 pounds which has a fleece of from 15 to 20 pounds. The fleece really stands before us, equal in every respect of nutrition and exhaustive effect on tke little animal, as its whole live weight, and has taken quite as much of every element of nutrition from the food. But how many sheepmen think this when the ewes are building up the lamb, and ber fleece too, and has to main- ta v herself as well? Then with what care Mould the good shepherd treat the preg- nant ewes, to carry them safely over the crisis Cf the year’s eaistence. W- are apt to give not too much promi- ner (9 the breeding of our animals, thi: « «4 thatas like produces like «ll we baveyiv do is to procure some ‘well~bred stock, nad trust to them to transmit their good qualities to the progeny. This is ell very well tor a beginning, but the future ia to be considered, for it must aot be tor- gotten that, Ikea man’s good character which has been bult up bya _ score of vearsof honest derling, and may be lost in a few dave by some faul’, so with our animels—the reerlt of a score ortwo ot years of careful breeding may be Jost by one year’s neg] et ia teeding. And thusitis that we must secure the hereditary transmission of every good quality, by maintaining these by tbe very best feeding and care. And especially is thie a matter in which South African sh ep farmers shovli pay the utmost re- gard aod attention. Cape sheep «at their beet are not steck over waich much “crowing” can be indulged in, and this makes it sll the more imperative that the very best quelity of stock should not be ruthlessly sacrificed atthe shambles. A good deal of the poor quality of wool pro- duce seen at the London sales is directly traceable to a want of better breeding stock, and likewise better attention in the shape of better feeding; and South Africa will nevercome upto the high standard of excellence attained by other Britisb colonies till that is carefully and perseveringly done. i a ei Ae MARRIED.
