Mr. George E. | Hart & Co., wholesale grocers, produce eee and commission merchants, of Hollis Street, recently returned from Kngland, where he successfully and profitably | ae) disposed of a large quantity of apples, | potatoes, Lutter, XC., Ke. tle was found in his office vesterday afternoon, when he consenied to give the Mai/ his ideas of the most successful way to ship Nova Scotia frnit and produce to Kurope, which will be of interest to thousands of our readers, ; ‘Yes,’ said Mr. Forsyth, in reply to our reporter's question, ‘we have ship- ped a considerable quantity of produce to Eagian this season. | ment was meade from Charlottetowe in the steamer Prince Ec ward, xnd turned out successfully, [ wanted a trip te Europe, and went over myself. My trip paid well, and [ thoroughly enjoy- ed myself.’ Rep.—What did the last shipments consist of ? Mr. F.—-Potatoes, Oats, Butter, and Sheep, shipped from P. K. Isiand,- per S. 8. Prince Edward ; and apples, from Wharton: Rep.—In what part of the Province were the apples raised ? Mr. F.--Mostly in Kings County. They comprised Russeis, Baldwins, Van deverso, and Rhode Isiand Greeniogs \ COMPARISON OF NOVA SCOTIA, ONTARIO AND AMERICAN FRUIT. Rep.—ltiow did they comparo with apples from the Upper Provinces aud the United States, when placed on the English market ? Mr. F.—-I saw them opened side by side with Americans, and they were fullly equal to them im quality and | fiavor, but they were not so nicely as—| sorted. The Americans were better! packed, and consequently looked bette: and Jooks go for a goed dea! in Hoglish us in other, markets. The looking article seils best, and brinys the highest price, though the other may be its equal in every other respect. This little point is fuliy understood by our neighbors. The American and Oatario applies were put up ta hardwood barreis similar to flour barrels; ouis were packed ia soft wood, and did not look nearly so well. AN IMPORTANT POINT FOR APPLE ERS. Rap.—Tien you think our apples should be put up in hardwood barrels ? Mi. I. —Yes. Lardwood barreis are better. Lsuouid prefer them but I dout know that the barrels would make much difference if our apples were more care- fully assorted aud packed, and leoked cleaner. | wish that point could be placed cieurly before our apple grow: ers. A medium sized apple is preier-: red in Koyland. They dou’e ovdject to Jarge or smali apples, but they wont give so much for them. What is want. ed is that large apples be packed iu barrels by themseives and brended ;! the same with medium and small, then dealers will know what they are selling and how to sell them and people will know what they are buying, and prices Will range accordingly. Whereis now, in maby instances, all sizes, are thrown into & berrel helter skelter, no one knows what he is getting; it is very unsitisiuciory and the applies do not bring neariy as much as would be real- ized if they were properly asserted. SHORT MEASURE. Rep.— Was there any diiference in the quantity of apples iu the American, Upper Provinee or Nova Scotian barrels ? Mr. I'.—Yes, and that is another im- portant matter that our apple packers must look after, if they intend to muke any headway in the English market. Both the Upper Province and Ameri- ean barrels hold nearly quarter a bushel more than ours do, and other things being equal, buyers naturaiiy prefer barrels that contain the most potatoes i neatest PACK- Canadian Produce for England, Our last ship- J ij &S T p i CE ( ¥ ED, oe Halitax, per brig Annie PALER SaaS ene. ; PHA SOUP. | | PREPARED with Pea Flour and seasoned i aud flavored with the tinest herbs and wasonin s, to which is ad led Liebigs’ Katract | lof Meat, making one of the most nutritious | iishes that can be obtained. | A @5 cent iin will maxe soup. : For sale at BEYOTDD «4, BY ava’ av Feb. 18, 1880, 3 quarts of thick GOFPs. 1.) = CASKS STILL ON HAND.
