B.D.HlGO ‘ 3.9.:-loo Editor and Hanging l Business Wit ‘floating lhuaidiih: JULY 7, 1892. , T The Funny Side of Advertising. We live in an advertising age. Adver- tisement writing has become a science and the advertisement writer a professional. Now-a-days in big cities no fir-st class es- tahlishment is without its well paid adver- tising manager. Some exceedingly clever work is done in this branch of modern literature. One of the best humorous papers in Ameria isimued by a largedry goods establishment in Brooklyn, and no advertisements but its own appear in its pages. Even in our own little Island ad- vertising has made great strides in the last few years, and while it is still capable of developmeut,it has ceased to be always dry reading. Indeed, sometimes it h scanned as eagerly as some of the non- advertising columns. it’; Of course there are tendencies in the advertising crase which we must regret. For instance, we objectto it in the pol- pit. The church is no place for secular announcements which can be just as well made in the press. The custom however shows little sign of abatement, and where it will end if much longer continued, it is hard to foretell. A few weeks ago we actually heard a prominent divine in the United States read an announcement from his pulpit to the eflect that “ a respectable colored man in this congregation wishes a situation as Janitor. He is willing to make himself generally useful about the house.” Whether or not the clergman received any thing towards the church funds for mak-l ing this advertisement we did not ascer- tain; he certainly did not add much to the dignity of the pulpit. If this thing goes on much longer we may expect‘: to see pulpit space rented to advertisers at so much a panel where the virtues of Castorig Surprise Soap, and sundry cough mixtures can be held up to the prayerful consideration of the worship- pal. O.‘ Ofcouraeif thepulpit indulgesinad- vertising the church papers may be par- doned if they sometimes take a novel departure in the persuasive art. The following stanza from an American Sun- day school paper, however, while laugh- able in a way, will strike most people as an audacious specimen of misguided talent: Hark, the Herald Angels sing, Beecham’s pills are just th_¢_s‘t§jl_;_%:,--vs" PM on mild, T“? and one for child. - "Itc-anatleastbe saidthat thisis one kind ofadverfing thatisreadand which P3!'- ' ‘I- *5 To come back to the pulpit ’ it may be saidthattheamericaupulgithas an ex- cuse-if a poorexcusecan be bettc lhanl ncuc—for its advertising customs', which doesnothold good here; Amerian pa’- puaarenotexpeetcdtolivsonthcgloryl of advertising everything the churchgeta upfrea ofcharge or even at If the American church; have a concert or an excursion and will to advertise in thcpressthsylnvetopay and are, pre- wanted the American’ ‘ pum ' ‘u asked—uotto turn his bminsu into a charityshop-—buttoput, lab hand iuhis pocket and pay his share like any other right thinking man. 9*-5 Andthis remiadsusof acustom pre- vailing here respecting free advertising, which savors so much of the fake busi- nemthatitshoeldonly needtoberefer- redto ones to stop it. Mr. C.urrnrLr..—No, no. I may in reply to his honor the President state the difference between this Bill and the one sent up by the Sullivan Gov- ernment. The present Dominion Gov- ernment have been trying to extend the. franchise, but the Government of 4 Hon. Alexander Mackenzie tried to disfranchise the young men of this Island and it was a Conservative Senator, Hon. T. H. Haviland, who succeeded in getting the Bill changed and allowing our young men to retain their rights. Oh freedom, what crimes are committed in thy name ! I do not believe one word about the shovels be- ing taken from men on the Railroad because they were Grits, for I know that supporters and relatives of my hon. colleague are employed on the Railway. Citing one or two cases of dismissal does not prove anything, we know not what misconduct these men may have been guilty of. If the Dominion Government had no power to dismiss cflicials guilty of misdeeds, what a state the Service would be in soon! But because one or two men were dismissed, the Government make that an excuse for disfranchising seven or eight hundred men. In 1887 I ran an election for the House of Commons, and nearly every Dominion oficial in_ the City of ‘Charlottetown voted against me, but the Government did not interfere with those men. Some of the best Conservatives were dis- missed from oflice, one very strong Con- servative who worked for me. This shows that the Government are im- partial in dismissing men from the service, so the arguments of hen mem- bars in favor of this clause are without foundation. The Leader of the Gov- ernment aaid he could talk about boodling in the Dominion and Local Governments, but when I was in the Department of Public Works, I defy him to show there was any boodling; everything possible was let by tender. Under the present Government men are refused contracts although they send in the lowest tenders, on account of their political opinions. The Gov- ernment are trying to hide their work in the Land Ollice and the Public Works Ofiice. The Leader of the Government says the men employed on the boats at Cape Traverse were driven like sheep to the polls, but what proof has he that those men did not vote as they did of their own free will? ‘fire Liberal Party have been asserting that the Itailroad is over-stocked with oflicials but when the. Many of our rich men are not intellectually the peers of the young men of the country. The President tells a “cock and bull” story about the shovels being taken from men shovelling snow from the railroad, but does any person believe that when a train was stuck, the political complexion of the men employed to shovel snow would be considered‘? Dyspepsia The peculiar combination of stomach tonics and altcrative remedies in Hood's Sarsaparilla cannot be equalled, and this superiority explains the wonderful success of This Great Medicine in cases of D ‘s is, Indi tion and similar troubldspegrslr. T. A.g:’heeloclt, a well known citizen of Burlington, Vt., writes: ' " Six months ago I was badly run down and unable to attend to business. The principal trouble seemed to be due to indigestion and aggravated dyspepsia. I had no appetite, Nothing Tasted Good and what I did eat distressed me. Addedto this was a nervous disturbance. Physicism that I employed failed to reach my case. I grew worse, last flesh and almost hope. One day I ran across a. testimonial for Hood's Sarsaparllla stating what it had done in what seemed to be a csfse similar to mine. I got a bottle and in three or four days saw that I felt better. Before I had finished the first bottle, was greatly improved.’ Rested better, - felt better, and knew I was Better All Over I continued with the medicine, and have taken two bottles and now feel better than at any time for the past live years. Fcelas hearty as when a boy. Have regained my flesh, have good appetite, can sleep well, and any nerves are in excellent condition. I would not value a thousand dollars for what it did for me." T. A.
