THE CADRE Success or bomb? Which of these will best de- scribe the UPEI '73 Winter Carnival? A small core of students has been working very hard since last November on the planning of the events. We have adopted a tentative shedule of events. A carnival can only be as good as the people working on it. We feel the Winter Car- nival, while it may con tain certain redeeming characteristics, suffers from the same problem that has plagued the Student Union this year. That is, quite simply, the same people with the same ideas. We who are now involved- in the S.U. seemingly have had little success in influ- encing new people to join or contribute to their S.U. There is no way one can thank the regular workers enough for all they have con- tributed this year. But at the same time the lack of an infusion of new energy, vigor and a determination to achieve can be felt at all le— yels of our organization It may be as some pe— ople claim, and as the failure of the Bio. Club _dance last Friday night seems to suggest, that there is on the part of many students a depar- ture from what some of us feel may be the tra-' ditional values of uni- versity life. When you're already involved in the cribes any one or anyfi . group which fails to U“- come involved in what we consider to be the main student outlets on campus. These are ‘the S.U. and athletics. We sit with our co— workers and our friends and shake our heads and moan about what we feel to be a failure of the students to become in- volved in their S.U. Would it be that some, students on campus mean it when they say that they have no connection with theS.U. and its merely an organization controled by a tight little clique who use the $40 fee to their advantage? It seems that the two groups are existing side by side without any common goal 'on functions and a com- plete lack of mutual understanding. Winter Carnival, which is understandably the biggest social event of the year, should offer an oppor- tunity for everyOne on campus to come together :an_opinion which quite possibly might be sha- dowed by our predjud- ices. With only a month left in our terms of office a large number of us have come to the conclusion that it does not matter how much we offer or how hard-we try we Just can't seem to please everyone. ‘ Verv’yru uver noted Torchlight Parade Official Opening Inter-residence Drinking Contest, Faculty Ale Drinking Rest and Recuperation Ice Sports Coffee House ' Main entertainment at Confed. We re- alize that in many ways students will judge our student council in a large part on the sue- cess or failure of our Winter Carnival so we- are certainly open to any ideas or sugges- tions. Silence, in our opinion, will mean ei- ther approval or a com- plete lack of interest, in which case we will certainly expect no cri ticism of the carnival either during the event or at any time there- after. .
