Lers or Poraroes—Never has there been seen in Shediac so large a trade in potatoes. The streets of the town are literally block- ed with wagon loads of potatoes. One cau see groups of twenty to forty at the stores of Messrs, Tait, Hamilton, Melanson, Poirier and others. The farmers who have a good crop are now gathering in the money. The potatoes are selling at one dollar per barrel. There are some farmers in Barachois, Aboujagane and Gappele who will make a clean profit of $600 alone. It is magvificent.—Moniteur Acadian. -- Tue Giovcester Losses.—The Glou- cester annual roli, giving the names of the fishermen who have lost their lives. during the year ending September 30th, has been made up. The roll shows aloss of fifty-nine men and eleven vessels during the past year, against the loss of seventy- four men and thirteen vessels in 1896. The crew ot the schooner Lizzie L. Green- leaf, numbering eighteen men, probably went down with their vessel, as they have never been heard of. The total value of the vessels lost was $65,830. Recertion on Satvurpay.—A social event of unusual interest was the recep- tion at Bryn-mor oo Saturday afternoon by Mrs. John Richards ae a farewell to Miss Minnia J. Palmer prior to her marriage to Mr. (©. C. Gardiner, on Wednesday morning next. The floral de- corations at Brya-mor were very pretty, those in the dining room being entirely of white chrysanthemums and maiden hair ferns most artistically arranged by Mies Fanny Longworth, Glyowood. One end of the large dining room was given up to the wedding presents, and it is not often that one sees such a complete union of good taste, usefulness, beauty and value as Miss Palmer’s numerous friends and acquaintances have shown in their remem brances.—Guardian. | | WORKING OF THE SPOILS SYSTEMS Sirn,—The atorv of dismissals under the regime of the presest government has now, perhaps, grown old. Those, however, which recently took place at Montague, ought net to pass unnoticed. Mr. Aitken, au bonest and faithful official, who took no part in political affairs except to cast his ballot, was receatly dismissed and bis place filled by a most active partisan, who spared neither tongue ner pen in uphold- ing the political dogmas of his party. Not even that most faithful one could be admitted into the secret of this diplomacy, for he did not belong to the family com- pact and his companionship however dear at other times must needs be resented, and so Sir Louis missed the warm congra- tulations which he well knew how to give in that peculiarand sweet accent which renders him as singular as his life is single. However, the southern messenger returned and for some days there was a treacherous calm; but a despatch from Ottawa soon revealed all and Sir Louis,con- trary to his Parliamentary utterances that for offensive political partizanship alone would officials be dismissed, appears to have overlooked his own declarations and the desires of his friealae in this vicinity. But a few short years will soon roll rouod and then shall be reaped abundautly the fruits of what is now being sown. MonTAGUE. SOURIS NOTES, Miss Aimee Ceci!
