BLIADHNA MHA URl_ _ The would around today friend will greet -friend the old and ever new wish “A Happy Ne\v ” It is not an idle wish,-a stereotyped phrase. once in the year at least, and on its threshold, and women will look forward _with the unselfish hope that the new pages to be written will be filled -‘With blessings for others as well as for themselves. I A Happy New Year! Whatever it holds _forus of joy or sorrow, of profit or loss, of good or ill, \ve enter its portals with hope, with kindly feelings for ;,each other, with the mutual assurance that God -is in His Heaven and all is well with the world.’i ‘ This on the threshold of the year. Let us aim to _‘perpetuate the kindly thought, to retain the Happy New Year wish as we pass through its various com- _partmentsyas we enter its joy-lighted rooms-for joy-lighted some of them will be; as we pass through its darkened rooms. for darkenedi some of them will be. Let us strive to make it a Happy New Year for each and all, not only when the year is young, but when it has blossomed into summer, when it has be- come hoary with wintry age. ,_ Bright and glad, dark and sad, - Are the years that come in mystery clad; * ‘ Their faces are hidden, and none can see; If merry or sorrowful each \viIl be, Bright and sad, dark and glad, Have been the years we all ‘have had. With smiles of hope and not with tears, We meet our friends in the glad new years; God is with them, and as they come, They bear us nearer our restful home. And one by one with some treasures won, They come to our hearts till they all are gone ___.__-.0___._.___ 1 I E.\']).\ N(il'IRI.\`(il (‘())I M l'.\` l(`.-\'l`l()N Seldom has this province been moved as it wa: yesterday morning when word came that the Car - ferry steamer was ordered to the relief of the steam- er Canadian Spinner in the St. Lawrence River. Meetings were called at an early hour by the Char- lottetown and Summerside Boards ,of Trade and vigorous protests against what was regarded as an outrage were wired to the Prime Minister, the Rail- way authorities at Ottawa, Toronto and Moncton. Owing to weather conditions yesterday morning Captain Read deemed it unwise to undertake the proposed voyage. At the time of writing the ordei still stands and, if the protests forwarded yesterday morning are dis1°egar<_led, the Carfcrry will leave or her voyage of indefinite length and possible dangei as soon as the weather permits. This, should it hap- pen, would leave Prince Edward Island marooned, with thousands of dollars worth of perishable freight on its hands, its coal supply cut off, its imports held up in transit and its mails and passengers going anti -coming held up. And for this condition there could be no relief. 'l`hefprehistoi°ic ice-boats at the Capes if still in existence could not be manned without much delay, if at all. The Stanley is laid up for re- pairs ata most unopportune time and the Scotia _could not reach the Capes, even if she, could under- take theservice. I The Carferry is our only means of communica- ting with the Mainland. Working overtime daily. Sundays included, she is unable to keep the freight clear. If the service were interrupted for even 2 'few days it would involve serious loss to the province to say nothing of the inconvenience to men and wo- men called here or abroad on important business. and the holding up of the mails. I ` The present incident and its possibilities is the strongest proof of the necessity of having the second steamer on this route, and an agitation should be maintained from all quarters to get the authorities to fulfil their promise in this respect. ____0_______ l’Il()Sl’Ell_|.'|`_Y Il_.\)[l‘.\_1_\'_'|'. ` i tl 'Vi-`l'"€5i A_ccoi°_ding to the monthly Canadian Bank state- ment Just issued for November, the material prosper- lty of Canada_continues to grow at a rate unpreced- ented in its history, perhaps in the history of any country._ The figures are simply startling. _ ' During the _year the enormous sum of $650,000,- ~ 000 was subscribed to the Victory Loan.
