NEUTRAL COLORED UNIFORMS Are General Rule, Except With French and Belglane, Who Offer Easy Mark. LONDON, September 19.-The war put everybody in lehaki, with it few ex- ceptions. On the biittleline or in the field the English soldier and thr- English officer get out of their rlclily- colored :ind historic uniforms and liito khaki, of a neutral hue. Austrians have most of their soldiers in khaki null the ltussians all wcui khaki-colored cloth. The French still cling to their blue coats and brilliant red trousers, and the Belglans have a uniforiiin that is very sluilllar to thi French. 'l‘lic Freiicli and Belgian officers are dangerously ornamented with gilt trimmings during warfare, and pre- sent such brilliant targets that some of the Belgian regiments, durfng hard fighting with the Gerniuiis, have lost nearly all of their leaders. The new twentieth century mode of warfare puts the ban oii anything that glitters, even the rifle barrels, bayoiiets and snbres. The Scotch regiments won't give up their kllts. They have reluctantly permitted the War Department to take away from them their plaids and their highly colored banners and to substitute kliikl for the Highland hues, but they've gpt to - be ' khaki kilts, not khaki tro sers. In those days of high powered guns and scientific warfare, when all of‘ the old-tangled fashions in fighting have been thrown away and not even a band or fife and drum corps can get onto a battle field, the Scotch regi- ments still hang to their bag piper-s, or at least their bag pipers iiang to them. No English regiments will fifht to music, but the English War Ot ice .i~.i~»‘t cmint' the bag nine as a musical instrument, much to the delight of 'the ucutcu lighting men - -__..;.__-_?-- °..!.°\..§.f."..$?..'.‘..‘...!.’* ilu Kind Yu lim tiny: lluglii _| Bean the _ iilnatara of _ Island 'City Painting Co .f I ` `oopt§seti_ng Painters Hated, and Siga work. _ Kent SI. -l'hae2e0-I. ..*ONE CENT per word each in- sertion for advertising ln this col. umn. The wedding was at the home of the bride. Quite a number of guests were invited. The room where the ceremony was per- formed was beautifully and artistical- ly _decorated for the occa- sion. The young bride look- ed charming, dressed in white as she stood by the side of the bride- groom, under a canopy of evergreen and flowers, while. the minister, tfie Rev. David Wright, tied the nupt al knot. After the ceremony the com- pany sat down to a sumptuous and tastefully served dinner. Then the whole bridal-party drove to the sta- tion, and as they passed along Main Street they were received with it sal- vo of gun shots and fire-crackers. On _their arrival at the station an immense concourse of people received them with showers of rice arid- confetti. The train drew out amid the deafening screams of whistles, and the cheering of the crowds. They leave on a two- weeks honeymoon trip to Boston, New York and other principal cities of Uri- cle Sam, returning by Montreal and Toronto. The large number of beauti- ful aiid costly presents bespeaks for the young couple, the high esteem iii which they are held by their friends and acquaintances, and everybody wishes them _well in their matrimonial trip through life, and may they live long to enjoy it.--B . illill SHl]Ul|lE The silver cup presented by that keen riiie shot, Mr. W. S. Louson, Captain of the Civilian Rifle Club o f Charlottetown with the object of in- ducing civilians to take up rifle shoot- ing was shot for at the Keiisiii tori cup was given to be competed for by any in Charlottetown who had nev- er won a. prize at rifle shooting, and the conditions of the competition were seven shots at the 200 yards range. That the cup achieved in some nico- sure its worthy object is undeniable from the fact that ten men almost al- together new to rifle shooting were induced to go out to the riiie range on Saturday and shoot, in spite of the certainly uninviting weather condi- tions prevailing. And it is to he hoped that the inducenieiit will furth- er serve to make them permanently interested in shooting ln the practical form in which that liiterest has been created. The fascination of rliic shooting is such that once it has ap- pealed to anyone in any way it will sooner or later but surely gain coin- plete hold of him. it is to be trusted that the ten tyros who completed for the Louson Cup on Saturday will hc- cornc regular attendants at the range. With the importance of shooting so pressing at the present moment, at least a score or two score of competi- tors might reasonably have been ex- pected to participate in the Louson Cup competition, but while this was not so, that iio fewer than ten new shots have been created as the re- sult of the competition is a. suflicient- ly gratifying feature. The tyres re- ceived every asslstance from the old- er shots: not only was the use of rides with their modern aids given, but al- so practical usslstniice in regard to combating the weather conditions and the use of the sights, etc.,-a surely creditable action ou tho piirt oi’ iill such. Mr. Lousoii's Cup was won by H. A. Messervy with the good score of 29 points. Also ou Saturday afternoon the members of the Civilian Club shot the first stage of the club competition for tlie Silver Solver and the Brown Cup rcoiicurreritly- seven shots each at the 200, 500 and 600 yards. Topiiiuii iii tho ilrst stage is G. lt. Beer, with tho fine score of 96, shoothg condi- tions, with a raw and gusty wind and a variable light, being anything. but favorable for good shooting.
