More than two hundred and titty years ago the fierce Manchlls came down from the northeast, conquered China, set one of their princes on thi- throne and have since ruled the Ce.n» tral Flowery Kingdom. The other day day the last of the dynasty, a boy of tive years, Pu Yi by name, was made to abdicate the throne and so terminated the rule of the Man- chus in China. This brief recital marks a most important epoch in the history of one-fifth part of the hu- man race. Of course, Pu Yi, the boy- Empsr~ or, known in the palace as "the Lord of Ten Thousand Years,” had very little to do with this transac- tion himself. The abdication was done for him by his father, Prince Chun, who has held the post of Re gent und has been the chief figure in the Government for some years past, along with Yuan Shi Kai as Pre- mier. The fact is that for some time past, covering the entire reign of the boy Emperor, the spirit of re- form has been working powerfully in the nation. The late Empress Dowager on her iieathbed in 1908 made -a promise to give the Chinese people constitution- al Hover-nment, but this was not ful- filled in any way till May of last year. In that month an imperial edict abolished the old Grand Coun- cil and created n constitutional cab~ inet. Since then atiairs have moved rapidly toward the consummation which has'now been reached. Reform ideas had been spreading in the south- clared against the continuance of the Manchu dynasty.
