The rock was 18 feetlong, 8 feet wide, and 6 feet deep. It was a blue stone, and was 18 feet below the surface at low tide. The work was performed with a steam drill, and the depth of wal er, together with the lighter from which the ldrill was operated, made the task most. difficult, and it was the first time that a steam drill _had been made to work ata ‘ distance of about 30 feet, successfully. The work occupied about 2 days, during which time two holes, of about 4 feet each were. drilled in the rock.
