Charlottetown L r I On Sunday last the upper reach- es of theDunk River drowaed peace- fully in the early June sunshine. In the numerous pools along the river trout of all sizes lazily finned. in the shade of the firs. lhriy in the afternoon a car stop- ped in a secluded spot some dist- ance from the-river and four army men got out and quietly wended their way riverward. Reaching its banks they deployed in skirmish- ing order, carrying certain small- ish objects with extreme care, The big trout i-n the Hatchery Pool milled uneasily, their broad powerful tails stirring upa smudgy screen on the gravelly bottom. Suddenly one of the men raised an "irm in a throwing motion and in a matter of seconds the afternoon quiet was shattered by a deafening explosion and a gyser of water shot skyward. Again and again the shattering detonations rang out and the surface of the swift flow- ing river was soon dotted with trout of all sizes floating belly 1113-. moving unresiatingly toward iii * IE1. At 5.30 p.m. the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Detachment at Summerside was stirred to quick action by a phone call:,"A bunch of soldiers are dynamitlng the trout in the Dunk River" In spite of a fast drive the Police arrived min- utes too late; their quarry had dis- afipeared. Investigation soon s owed the seriousness of the situation. Hundreds of trout could be seen either floating on t): wat- er or strmded in the eddies. Foot- prints along the banks showed that he detpredati-on had been carried out systematically and tho/rough- Working late-‘into the night the officers came to the conclusion that the parties implicated came from Charlottetown. The Police moved swiftly. All Monday and well into the night the investi- gation proceeded quietly. Then early ‘mesday morning as Camp was in process of breaking up two uniformed Police visited the Or- dinance Grounds. The remaining three were all sen- ior Non-Oolnmissioned Officers from Halifax, The four soldier’ concerned were then handed ave.‘ to the Dominion Fisheries Offic- ers along with the evidence. The Dominion Department_of Fisheries have their own officers and con- duct their own prosecutions. The men were held over and were tak- en before 8t ndiary Magistrate Richard B. Hilton at Bummerside on Wednesday evening. The Magistrate cracked down .. hard. The Special Fisheries Act rovides a special penalty ior us- ng explosives or chemicals on trout with a minimum penalty of $100.11). He added $26.00 to ths by way of good measure and fined each $125.00 arti costs. A total of over $00.00 for an afternoon's en- tertalnmerit. This is the first time anyone so this province has been convicted of the offence of using explosives on trout, but it la not the first time it was done. Some years ago ex- loaives were used at Black River. ter on the trout Pool below Dewar’: Mill at Brudenall was blown out and hundreds of trott killed. The most recent act of this kind to come to the notice of the Police was the dynamlting of the famous trout Pool at the head of Hope River, known as Doyle's Hoe. A whole cartioed of trout weredestroyed on this occasion and the Pool has not hem the same since. Let the afore meni- loned penalties be a warning boys, don't take any more chances.
