The following lirief particulars, which were gleaned from a respectable individual, who was perfectly acquainted with the subject of this narrative. in her childhood, and who saw and conversed with her a few days ago, may be received as perfectly authentic. About twenty-six years ago, two female children, one aged nine, the other seven years, daughters of an industriotis poor man named Keith, residing at the Butternut Ridge, In this County, was sent one morning by their parents to drive home their cows, which were browsing in the woods near to and adjoining their residence. After a censiderable time had elapsed, and there being no appearance ofthefr return, the parents became apprehensive for their safety, and con- cluded that they must have ventured farther into the woods, and lost or mistook their way; that and several succeeding days and weeks were spent in a fruitless search by III-elf afllicted parents, and different others of their neighbours, ’ ' 16!; their recovery, but in vain. Years rolled on; enquiries . frdmtime to time were diligently set afloat, .al‘td not the ' most minute trace or intelligence could be received of these dear children. Time at last seemed in a measure to recon- cile the minds of the distracted parents, when finally the aged sire, bowod down by this sad bereavement, bent like RICHARD Mscasnaancn, Pensioner, “Formerly Light Company Coldstream Guards, Back- “ worth Colliery, near North Shields." THESE excellent MILLS are now in full operation, and the public are lien-by informed, that n crinveyiiiice will i (says the Newcastle' Journal) has been handed to us by the _incessantly pouring in amongst them. ‘You scoundrels,’ HUGOOMONT.—The following interesting communication writer, whose name is subscribed, and relating as it docs to an event of such importance as the memorable battle on the plains of )‘Vaterloo, will be read with much interest :— “ Along with the detachment ofBriiish and Foreign troops which Wellington posted at Hugounioni, for its defence, was a brigade of English, consisting of the Light and 7th corn- pnnies of the Coldstream Guards. No sooner were the Guardsmen fairly within the Chateau garden, than the temptingly ripe cherriasdrew their attention, and the sol- diers were to be seen plucking them oft‘tlie wall trees by bandsful, quite regardless of the shot and shells which were roared out Major James M‘Donnell, the ofiicer in command ofthe brigade, ‘ ifI survive this day,I will punish you all.’ But alas! before the close of the murderous struggle, how few of the cherry stealers were left for punishment in this world! Out 01'134 as smart young soldiers as ever drew a . trigger (the number of the two corripaiiies,) only thirteen could muster when the roll was called ; and these survivors were led out of action by Corporal Smith, every ofiiccr and non-commissioned ofl'icor being either killed or wounded. The Emperor's commands were, ‘Carry the p05I,’ while our {Juke s were, 'Keep it ;’ and a most terrible post it was to cap. Once the French broke into the court yard, and such a scene of bayonet work I, the narrator ofthis article, never before or sincebeheld. It was fairly a trial of strength—tho French grenadiers were not to be trifled with, anil we looked ‘ like so many butchers red with gore, or rather like so many demons rioting against fire, for the shells Iiad set two hay- stacks in a blaze, and many a poor fellow, bleeding and 4 wounded, being unable to get out ofthe way, was burnt to death. ‘Shut the court yard gates,’ roared out our Serjeant Major Fraser, ‘aud keep them out,’ and ii rush was instantly piade‘to the gates, the French without and the Guards with- in, Life and death were in the struggle, for Ney was at hand With a force that threatened destruction to the post: but British physical strength overcame the French iirdour, and the gates were closed by the powerful shoulders of Major N‘Donncll, and the giant ofa serjeant major, with as may ofours as could get to them. The French thus enclosed in the court yard, surrendered by throwing down their firelocks, and were ordered to fall back; but they forgot the duties of prisoners. Their countrymen again charged Hugoumont with horse and foot, and partly overpowered the Nassau troops, and caused them to reel a bit ; and then it Was that the few Frenchman we had taken again seized their arms _ and attacked us In the rear. Fortunately, the post was car- ried, and now a vengeance stern and dreadful aWaited the prisoners. They had grosst violated the articles of war, by taking up their arms after surrendering as prisoners, and the cause uence was, that every man of them was put to death, some y the bayonet, and some were thrown into the blazing boy‘stacks by our infuriated men. hough now 27 years have rolled away since that dread- ful scene took place, yet it is fresh in my mind’s eye, and my ears yet tingle with the yells of those misguided French- men, es‘tbey were tumbled into the fiery furnace. Charge after charge, and cannonade after cannonade, were re eated on this devoted post, yet still it was not carried. tiring one ofthe charges made by the French cavalry, I could not but adnure the coolness of a highlander belonging to the 912d Regiment.
