A very la-rge number of American visitors to Europe went straight to Austria, Germany and France be- cause they could see there the plays and operas associated with those countries, __ Sir Nigels-aid. None of them would miss London if they were sure- ofseeing- the plays of Shak_espea.re_ but at present they knew they could not do so. That would be partlyiiremedied by the or- ection oi the great. theatre at Strat- ford-on-Avon, but something should also be done .ln the centre of the Empire. The National Shakespeare Memorial Association had $450,000 available 'for the actual building of a national theatre. That meant very little in these days, but they wefe hopeful that the Government would make some move. The present Gov- ernment was taking greater interest i.n Lhe subject than any of itspre- deoessors. They were not hoping for a large grant from the Government, for -that would not be possibleuntil public opinion had been more in- structed. They hoped that the Gov- ernment would at once grant a site on which the -national theatre could be started. A gift of that kind would stimulate the imagination of the English people, more fudds would be forthcoming, and the movement really wouldbc started. Sir Joluisionrorbes-Robertson at the conference over which he`pre- sided recalled-that in-19l4'a site 'for a national theatre was secured-but the w'a.r» frustrated the efforts of'the promoters and the site was' sold. Premier Rimsay MacDonald had given encouragement, Sir -Johnston sald,`by saying that he'waa not un- willing to consider favorably an agreed scheme if out forward by the various interests concerned. The conference had been* convened 'in order thlt`they might carry out no- oesssry preliminary business- before they approached the Govemmcnt and putiorward auch an agraeli scheme as might be poaaiblajtow- ards a National Theatre.
