Discussion 0n Ferry Repairs By Trade Board An interesting discussion on car ferry transportation took place at a council meeting of the Char- lottetown Board of Trade yester- ay, Mr. Bonnell. for the tatlon committee. reported an in- tervlew he had with Premier J. Walter Jones. The Premier was working to keep the “Prince Ed- ward Island." ferry on the Borden- Tonrlentlne route until after Old Home Week, and he would like to have the Board of Trade's supp- ort in this matter. He was also en- deavoring to have a shelter prov- ided on the “Scotla,” as well as tol- let facilities on both piers. Mr. Bonnell had asked the Premier why they could not have the “Scotia" brought here s week or two be- forg old Home Week, to handle the traffic and freight. The Premier thought that was a point well ta- ken. M1‘_. Bonnell later got in touch with the president of the Summerside Board of 'I‘rade and they have agreed to support this request. Mr. J. O. Hyndman recalled the bad situation prevailing last year, and stressed the need of making arrangements of this kind months ahead. Mr .Bonnell: “We also asked for three eight-hour shifts to go on the car ferry when she goes i1.- m drydock. Mr. Hynclman: "Our represen- tatives should be on the job. They all know the conditions, yet we get no cooperation." M1‘. R. E. Mutch: "I think we should only make this request on condition that assurance is given that there is am 1e time left to prepare the "Pr nee Edward Is- land" for next winter. ‘Ihat is the most important thing. We were told last winter that the boat was in bad shape and she has not improved any since then. We have no lmowledge as to what repairs are needed, and we should not take lt for granted that she can be repaired. They didn't repair her last year as they should have. whet assurance have we that they will do it this year in less time?" Mr. l-lyndmsn sugfisted com- municating with Capt. McGuire. Mr. Mutch: If this boat can be overhauled in one month why wasn't she done now?" Mr. w: "The Scotis had to be overhauled too that was the trouble." . Mr. Mutcht "It has taken a month to overhaul her. Another boat was offered for the Borden route too, and thev never even acknowledged the o fer." Mr, Dew; "What happened?” Mr. Mutch: "We didn't have to depend on the scotle. There was a boat ready to take up the work and they never even answered." SUPREME HEADQUARTERS ALLIED EXPEDL TIONARY FORCE, June 29—(AP)—British troops slug- ged out local gains 2 1-2 miles north of Caen in fierce fighting today as the Germans rushed up major reinforce- ments both from the south and from Germany itself for the first time since D-Day in the developing showdown battle of Normandy. STRENGTHEN ODON BRlDGEI-IEAD Five miles south of Caen, a Supreme Headquarters communique announced, the Allies strengthened their bold on the Odon River bridgehead and wiped out by-passed pockets of resistance and the area of Mondrainville and Tourvllle, from two to three miles behind the fighting front. Allied air might, which smashed at the strategic troop reserves last night. with an R.A.F.-R.C.A.F. raid on the rail centre of Metz, turned its attention today to the tactical reserves speeding up from Paris over devious routes sear- ed by Allied bombers. The ranks of enemy reserves were decimated by mas- sed Brltish and Canadian artillery and by fighter-bombers which struck road and rail bridges near Montfort- Sur-Rlsle, Cherisy, 40 miles west of Paris, St. Paul-Cour- tonne, about 45 miles east of Caen, and ranged far south and hammered trains at Orleans ‘ The Germans, throwing in their air force during the generally un- favorable weather, lost at least 44 aircraft in air battles that swirled over the French front and deep into Germany itself.
