other country in the development of the

army costs about $1.250.
The klte balloon is not surrounded
weight. A belt of heavy sailcloth
passes around the balloon at the bottom,
and to this corks are attached, which
connection with the ribbon through a
cable system. When the balloon rises

The war balloon is always attached
to a cable. The outfit consists of eight
waggons. One holds the balloon, one

war. Six ot these, holding twenty
cylinders each. will carry enough gas
toflll the fballoon; the other six are as

reeled in by hand. It takes :sixteen
men to reel 63) meters :of cable in
twelve to dfteen minutes.

of the German military :service attached
to the railroad brigade. There is a

bag of the balloon is an elongateo cylinder
with hemispherical ends. This bag is
illled with hydrogen gas. It hangs at an
angle of forty-dve degrees, due to the
,fact thata smaller wind-bag hangs at
the end of it and partly surrounds it.
This wind~ba.g is in fact the rudder to
the balloon.
A German war balloon is made of
cotton cloth. It is composed of two
thickness of the cloth coated with-\
rubber. This is the heaviest fabric
used in ballooning. and this fact is very
much against it. It has been found by`
experiment, however, that the silk bal-
loon is too strong a conductor of elec-
tricity. especially when coated with
rubber. Some years ago, when a silk
balloon was sent up in Berlin, the man
handling itreceived a violent shock, and
then the balloon burst into flames and
gas exploded, killing one man and in-
juring live others. Since that time
rubber-coated silk has not been used in
military ballooning in Germany. But in
the United States there have been silk
ballooning used for war purposes, and in
the experiments made in Colorado by
Capt. Glassford, of the signal service,
pongee silk, treated with linseed oil, was
used successfully.
Some very expensive experiments were _
made abroad with goldbeater’s skis.
This is the membrane obtained from the
entrails ofthe bullock. One animal fur-
uishesa single membrane from 18 to 30
inches long and 10 to 20 inches wide. *
These membranes are salted until needed.
Then they are placed in a vessel with salt
water, with a glue obtained from the,
sturgeon of the Caspian Sea.
Amodel ot cotton cloth having been
prepared, the surface is oiled, and inflated
within a scafolding. The membranes are
taken from the water and _stretched on
the inflated cotton cloth, their edges over-
lapping. In this way the model is cover-
ed completely. Two more layers of mem- 5
brance are laid on. an-l then ribbons of the A
same material are laid so asgto form a lat-
