The University of Prince Edward Island Panthers are in second place after a week- end split with the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men in Atlantic Universities Athletic Association Men’s Basketball action at Alumni Gymnasium. The Panthers, who were ranked sixth in the country by the Canadian InterUniversity Athletic Union, defeated ninth-ranked St. F.X. 71-60 Friday night but lost to the X~Men Saturday afternoon 74-68 in overtime. Tejan Alleyne scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to pace the Pan- thers Friday night to their third win of the season. Delroy Adams added 14 points and spearheaded the UPEI attack in the second half with'key baskets; and he was also the leader of the . Trevor Willock scored ten points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Mike Morgan scored 12 points and cleaned 6 rebounds off the glass. Chris Sellitri and Brent Baker each scored 18 points for St. F.X., with Sellitri grabbing 11 rebounds. St. F.X. shot only 36%; UPEI fared a little better, hitting 42% of their shots from the floor. UPEI lead 34-23 at halftime. The game was very fast and very sloppy, foreshadowing the style of the game Satur- day. UPEI held a two-point lead with thirty seconds left in the game when UPEI committed its 27th turnover. Kyle Gayle picked up an errant pass and drove the lane but was fouled by Mike Morgan. Gayle sank two free" overtime and St. F.X. upset UPEI to put the X-Men into a three-way tie for second place with UPEI and Acadia. These games, which were held Friday evening and Sat- urday afternoon were the first games since Christmas vacation for the Lady Pan- -\ thers, and the gruelling prac- tices seemed to have paid off. Friday’s game saw’UPEI hosting the St. Francis Xav- ier X-ettes. The X-ettes came on stronger than anticipated by the Lady Panthers. Still, UPEI was able to dominate the rebounds and therefore gain control of the game. The Panthers got a total of 58 rebounds compar- ed to the X-ettes 23. . The game’s leading scorer was Paula Edwards, who had 16 points, followed by Sher- rydawn Jones and Sonia Ed- wards with 12 points each. At half time, the Lady Panthers led 31 to 22. IN THE SECOND HALF THE aggressive play continued and the referees remained un- concerned. The Lady Panthers have a 6-1 record and remain 1 point behind league-leading UNB. The Panthers are in home action again this weekend against the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday at 1.00.
