The church’s Young} People’s Association has weak- | ened to 13,700 members, down a 1,400 from 1962. * The: church is baptizing and eonfirming fewer persons. than tt did in the 1950s. Over - all membership has made a steady growth in the last few years, reaching 1,365,- 413 at the end of 1964, but the growth of Canada's population ‘ has been much more rapid by comparison. “Our unilingual church of British origin makes little ap- . feal to the immigrant with a different national culture,”’ says Rev. Godfrey Gower, ishop of New Westminster, in his report on the statistics and state of the church. “What_hasbeen_our__strength | in the past may be a_ hinder- ance to us in the future as we seek to fulfil’ our task in Can- ada among a multilingual and liiralistic society." ITES REASON ~ ae Bishop Gower, admitting “serious concern'’’ about the membership of Sunday school and youth organizations, adds: “If one is permitted to hazard @ reason, this lack of hold on our youth stems from a vague- ness of Christian witness in the home, but _ equally fromthe growth of many .community_1n- | cterests which attract so diver- sifying personal activities that Parish programs compete un- equally with them.” Other declines show in the membership of Anglican wom- en's and men's groups and the) nmimber of families on church rolis, as distinguished from the | totals for over-all membership. The report says it is begging | the question to blame ‘‘the glit- tering attractions and glamor- ous “appeals of the . well-to-do | secular society” for’ the muf- fling of the church's appeal. MUST WORK HARDER The report says the church has néw work ‘to’ do, and must seek new patterns for Christian action “The church exists to give so- ciety the right -kind of stability and the right set to its spiritual life. The chief lem then is to regain the confidence of the MANY OWN STOCKS Wages and salaries in the foutfi@astern United States amiount to 67 per cent of all per- fonal income, the rest being pro-. éetors” incéme and” profits or dividends. os 4 ave DELLA'S The newest, most chie millinery creations of Fall 65. are arriving ally, help yourselfto fash- ion — see them soon.
