A’young lady from Cc incinnati visiting a la dy friend j in the St. Louis was quite certrin the other night that she had at last bagged the bird. A par'y oftwelve of them had been to the theatre, and upon their re- turning home the Cincinnsti young lady retired to her room humming in sul ducd tone: ‘In days of old, When thieves were bold And bandits beld their sway, A burglar bold, With bags of gold Sand merilv his lay: My love—” At this point, she saw half protrud- ing from beneath the erd of the bed a pair of man’s She did not scream or rush wild!y from the room, but with great presence of mind branch- ed off into a timid, tremulous little boot’s. whistie and walked around once or twice apparently unconserned. MARK TWAIN. I became an honorary member of the Western Now York Poultry Society, and my ambition is satisfied. Seriously, from early youth I bave tuken av especial interest in the sebject of poultry-raising, and so this member- ship touches a ready sympathy in my breast. Even as a schoolboy, poultry- raising was a study with me,and I say without egotism that-as early as the age of seventeen I was aequainted with the best and speediest methods of rais- ing chickens, from raising them off a reost to burving lucifer matches under their nose, down to ifting them off a fence on a fresty night by insinuating the end ofawarm board under their heels. By the time I wastwenty years old, I really suppose I haderaised more poultry than any one indvidual in all the section round about there. The very chickens came o know my talent by-and-by. The youth of both sexes ceased to paw the earth for worms, and old roosters that came to crow, ‘‘remain- ed to prey,” wheo I passed by. I have had so much experience in the raising of fowls that I cannot but think that a few hiots from me mizht be use- ful tothe society. The two methdds | have already touched upon are very simple, and are @ly used in the rais- ing of the commonest class of fowls; one is fur summer and the other for wiuter In the other case you start out witha friend along about eleven o’clock on a summe ’s night (not later, because in some States — es- pecially in California and Oregon— chickens slways rouse up just at mid- night and crow from ten to thirty min- utes, according to the ease and difficulty they experience in getting ‘he public waked up),and your friend carries with him asack. Arrived atthe ben-reost (your neighbor’s, not your own), you light a match and hold it under first one and then apvother pulletv’s pose until they are willing to go into the bag with- outany trouble about it. You then re- turn home, either taking the bag with you or leaving it behing, according as circumstances shall dictate. N. B.— I have seen the time when it was eligi- ble and appropriate to leave the sack behind and walk off with considerable velocity; without ever lesving any word where to send it, ee Making a day of it. The following account of a long, long day of real enjoyment was taken from the lips aa Hampshire working-man— & carpenter—who visited the London Fisheries Exhibition by excursion train :—“Well, yes, there were four of us—me and wy missus, and my mate and bis missus; and I don’t know when- ever I did spend « pleasanter day. We started from our place in Cuckoo Lane about five in the morning, and jined, the ecursion train, There was sixteen "undred of us, and wegotto London about nine. Well, we walks over Waterloo Br idge and down the Strand to the ’Ouss 0’ Parlemint ; looked over they, and I could ’a’ bidded all day a- looking at the wood-work. Then we took a ‘bus to the Fisheries Exhibition, what we comed up to see; and we bid- ed there three hours, and ‘didu't think much on it, except Canady. Well, then, T be terrible took up wr’ pictors, I be ; so we goes and has a look at all they ws South Kensiogton. Arter that wu } ! Well, we got along all cause One of our wheels was afire. So weset too and ‘ad ujolly good dance on the platform for nearly an hour yand then we come on, and sapg all the way home, and back to our place in Cuckoo Lane, just o'clock. And I never did spend a jollier day as] known of. And it will last me some time. I tell ’o!” _ ~~! e Special N otices.
