Crry Desextcres.—Five thousand dollars worth of City Debentures were, last week, sold by W. Dodd, Esq., at 95 and 96 per cent. The sale wasa tolerably good one. But it would doubtless have been better had buyers felt assured the Debentures were issued in accordance with law. The De- bentures of this city should, at least, sell at par. We trust that our City Council will see to it, thatthe money raised by the issue of Debentures, is applied to the promotion of permanent improvements needed. =: - This we take from the Portland Adver< ser, the proposed part being, of course, the regular telegraphic despatch :— By an error in engrossment of the legis- lative appropriation bill,-which has been approved by the President, there is omit- ted an appropriation of $14,00v for the con tingent fund of the department of Justice. Alexandra” of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge Boom, Port Hill, on the evening of Wednesdsy, 30th ult. There are now ten subordinate Lodges on the Island, which all except one. The report given by each delegate was cheering and satisfactory,—-showing that love and unity prevailed among the Brethern, and that all the Lodges are on a sound financial basis. After lhe business of the meeting had been disposed of, all present (some 50 were represented or 60) sat down to an excellent supper got up by the Port Hill Brethern. After supper toasts and speeches occupied a couple of hours till the meeting broke up about 1]. To the credit of the Order we may remark that hard drinks were used on the occassion Bro. Yeo, the Prov. Grand Master, is spoken of the highest terms, hospitality of the Port Hill Brethern could not well be surpassed. The next quarterly meeting will be held at Georgetown on the last week in November. no while the , — I LONLCET ee A Sr. Joun Man Farts Heir to a Hanp- soME Fortune —Some two years ago the newspapers contained statements to the effect that Mr. J. W. B. Jamieson, of St. John, had become heir to an immense for. tune in Scotland, but as all reference to the matter ceased after a time, people be- gan to thing that the stories of Mr. Jamies son's good fortune had no greater founda- tion than othe:s of a similar character which were often met with in the papers. It ap- pears, however, that Mr. Jamieson’s legal advisers have been quietly working in his interest ever since, and have at last suc- ceeded in making good his claim to a pro- perty, which, although uot quite as large as was at first stated, is stilla very handsome The Globe “To-day, his solicitors, Messrs. C, N. & kh. C. Skinner, received a notice from their legal agents in the old country that they had been successful and that Jamieson will at once come into possession of $30,000 worth of real estate and #3, 000 accumulated rents. The expenses of prosecuting the claim amounted to a considerable sum —~ one legal firm having a bill for $1,000. Jamieson is one of the two heirs of an old gentleman named Patterson, who amassed considerable wealth in India, and who, in 1820 purchased a property in Glasgow. This property is now worth $60,000. When one. says :— * Patterson died he left all his property, by will, to one heir. By some blunder the Glasgow property was not mentioned in the will, Jamieson was the other heir-at-law, and this property had to be divided be- twen him and the party to whom the bulk of the estate had been left.” NOTICH.
