Any farmer that has it particularly good iicld of grain will make no mistake in entering it in the Fields of Stand- ing Grain Competition, and he may then have u chance to market his surplus grain through either one of these associations. At aiiy'ra.te, lt will he 0. good thing to have an ex- pert judge his field as a seed crop. Besides, enough entries have not yet been received to take up half the prizes, and the time for making en- tries is almost up. Full information can be hail at the Department oi Agriculture. GOOD CROPS.~Crops all over the Island are good, and notwithstanding the late season, with good weather conditions nt harvest time, Island farmers will produce their share of the Domiiiioii’s export; of food stuffs. In Cornwall, and from there toCra- paud, along the South Shore, every- thing is_nia.kiug good growth. Mr. W Davison, of’ the Department of Agri- culture, who spent last week in that part of the province, reports that haying is in full swing, and that the crop is a good one. More clover is to be seen in the fields than in a. num- ber ol' districts. In fact, as a. gen- eral rule. thc clover fields are ex- cellent. On account of the cold, wel spring smut is quite prevalent, and only 0. few fields may he seen that are free from this disease. Wheri grain was thoroughly treated in tht spring, however, there is less smut, especially on high ground. The et' fects oi' the present war are to b< seen in the country as elsewhere. A number of the young nien have beer culled away for service, .und more are in dully expectation oi’ o. cull. The loss of these is having quite an ef fect on the labor coiidltions through- out the fariniiig communities. :FLY TIME ls here and you will need lots of fly killers.
