Liberals Not All Harmonious in King’s County, A correspondent says: The Grit Con; vention at Dundas was in a confused state. Sir Louis endeavored to pour some oil on the troubled waters by his presence, but apparenily failedtodoso. Kickham and Hughes were put in nomination, and a baliot wes taken when » majority appeared for Hughes, to the disappointment of a large vauwbe> of delegate and spectators. Dr. Robertson cpened the ball with ais usual rhetoric and abuse of the Tory party, taking credit to himself for estab~ lishing cheese factories, eic., aud retired from the contest. Sir Lowi-, after the ballot was taken, stepped on the platform and harangued the audienee til! they got weary. He abused Sir Charles and the Oppositioa, went over the Natio al Policy, Prefereatial Tarii, artic!<s entered in the free list, the Y akoo scandal, wud ssid thatevery pledge and promise his Goverament had given were fulfilled. Kven the binder iwiue was free aod a boon to the farmers. Sir Charles, he said, knew evervthiog and he wonder« cdt»at he did not give the date of the election in Charlottetown on the 4th. Sir Charles, he said, bad no policy vor plat- form, only the old policy of 1€67 and was full of vaporish pred.ctions. be Grit party in King’s County is pretty well divided, as time will tell. Sir Louis could say whatever he iiked, there being no opposition. “When the Gat is away the mice can play.” Kven what he did say was taken with a graio of ealt by the audience. King’s Couity is sure of returning our man,Mr. Macuo. aid Sir Louis told them not to leave a straw. unturned. Haghes told them they had the Treas- ury at their back. Look out for boodling in the Grit camp. So it becomes us Con. eervatives now to be buckling on our armour for the hattle. It will be fierce. HOTEL ARRIVALS. Attend. $$ + >< —— —— - THE P. E. ISLAND EXHIBITION. Ir is pleasing to jeara that the exhibi« tior to be held bere uext week will be the largest and bestever held in Prinse Ed- ward Island. The energetic and apie secretary of the Exhibition Company is just now busily em ploved in taking eotries of intending exhibitors and preparing for the greatevent. Ifthe weatber should prove to be fise—as we hope it will—the attendance will be unprecedented. We learo that free fre.ght transportation will be afforded exbibiiors residing ia Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, as well as thoseof P. KE. Island. It is likely, therefore, that interest in the exhibitioa will be heightened by a considerable cuts side competition. P.E. Islanders have 8o often gone to Halifax and St. Jehu and carried away many notable prizes that it is said our neighbors are on their mettle and keen to carry away prizes from Char- lettetown. Weshallsee whether or not they will succeed. At any rate cur local exhibitors will be on the ground in force ready to meet all competitors. " A = EO ee SUGAR BEET INDUSTRY. —_—-— Ir is pleasing to learn that Mr. Callaghan, of the Regietry Office, has been employing his jeisure hours towards the development here of the, sugar beet enterprise. According to a statement published by the Patriot, Mr. Callaghaa has, for some tire past, been in corres~ pondence with the Jetleraon Beet Sugar Compsny, of Waterton, New York, and has persuaded them,— oF * * * ot to establish a beet sugar factory in this province, cost- ing $500,000, proviced the farmere would guarantee to devote 3,000 acresot land tur the production of the sugar beet. They would require wliogether 5,00) acres, but once assured of the 3,000 tuey wouid pur- chase the ballance themselves. They agree to pay the farmer $4 per ton for ibe tee, and $1 per ton more if they receive one ceat per pound bonus on the madufactured sugar from the Dominion Governmen ; to supply tue ceed tree for the first year; 10 send torth, at their own expense, eaperts. to give all necessary information regara ng culiivstioa ot the soil, sowing of the seeus weeding, thinning and barvesting of the beet; 10 pay expcure Of transportation io the factory, and to return gratis to the ‘armmer tbe refuse pulp which makes ex erlieut teed for caruleand hogs. The fac ory,” it is said, “ will require in @ season 75 U80 tons of beets, which at $4 per ton amounts to $300,000, a sum almost equal to ihat paid iaet year for cheese in ibis province. Itwill give employment to 200 vaude, exclusive of skilled labor. Is wil) use 7 000 tons of coal and 5,000 tons ot iime-tone each sexton, and 2 5000000 vations of walter per Gav. I: will masu- tocture each season 6,000 tons of evgar, wikicb will be put ap tn 30,000 barrels, Lt will distribute amoug tie farmers each season 25,000 tons of pulp, while the daily iacome ond ouiput wil ameuct to GO car- loads. The factory viil be in @peration only in the winter &@:or, thus en avlieag the farmer t> bavl his load ot beeis aud re.ure with bis load of pu p at @ season wren he has moet leicure time.” The prices quoted are equal to i2: and 16: per busbel forthe beets supplied to the factory. Taking into accouat the re- turn of pulp, this ought to pay our farm~ ers pretiv well,—as well indeed as any- thing else. if they can raise five hundred bushels per acre, the returo per acre at 14 cents per pusbe! wl be $69, or $1.0 from two acre-, which th? compacy aske each farmer to set apart for ihe grow.h of sugar bee's. The land will, of course, require careful) cultivation aul f rtilizstion; but given these, eugar beets will grow as well here ar in soy other part of the world. This eaterprise one to which Dr. MeNeil', cf toiscity, aad Mr. Alex- ander Ma tia, the untiriag and watchful repres ntative of Belfast, have given con siderable aitention in recent If Mr. Callaghan has succcee led in iaducing the Waterton compavy to placeit up* euthe business basis described by Tie Patriot he bas doae aol greatcrejit.
