Ciirru.—'l‘lic details of the news from China b the Persia, possess few features ot interest. e China Overland Mail has the following re- lative to the rebellion and the tire at Macao: “ As usual of late. we have very little news about the rebellion, but it is not unimportant, and showsa downward progress. The Pekin Gazette states that Lu-cliau-fa, after being occupied for two years by the rebels, has been recovered by the government; and that the in- surgents of 'l‘sung- ang,in llupili, have likewise been routed. Anot ier account, however, states that they continue to wonder about froiu place to place infestiiig more particularly the neigh- borhood of Wu-ehang la, the ca ital of the province. in the great province ot Szccliuen a rising is reported; but it wopld seem to be local. and caused by a famine, from which no fewer than twenty-four districts are suffering. On the other hand, the rebels of Chin-kinng- fu are exposed to a worse visitation---a sort of lague, of which it is sziid u wards of 1,000,000 lieve nlrr-ad died. The isense attacks the throat, wliic speedily becomes so painful as to revent food lieiiig taken. 'l‘ho teeth turn black and fall out, and death is sure and sud- den. '1‘lie coininandant ol' Chin-kiang having sent to Nankiii for reinforcement, ii. strong body was ordered to move; but it was encoun- tered by the lniperialists, and after a compara- tively severe and bloody struggle gave way. and retreated to Nankin. 'liould the coriiniuiiica- tioii between the two strongholds of the rebels he cut rid, the recapture ol Chin-kiang by the Iinpcrialists is pretty certain, and the evacua- tion of Nankin by the rebels, at no very distant period. may be regarded as probable. The remains of the roving bands who caused so much alarm about Canton last year, are re- ported to be in motion in the upper part of the rovince; but they are not very formidable, as intercourse has not been cut 00'. nor trade seri- ously afleeted. Afire of an alarming nature broke out in Macao a little after noon on Pride last, which raged until the next morning. I urdly was it subdued, when another coiiflagaratioii arose a. little to the nothward (windward) of the locale of the first devastation. The result of the two burnings was the destruction of between 1000 and 2000 hou.~'es,propcrty over $2,000,000 in va- lue, aiid the loss of 70 or 80 lives, including those of the French frigates Virginie and (‘onslau- tine, who were killed by the fall ofa house, pulled down by their comrades. '1‘lie region destroyed comprises the area between the Cus- tom uiid the Senate lloiises, Church of St. Do- mingo, and the l’raya Pcquena ; over it fourth of the whole city, we take it." Sroitir I.\’ Cars Bar.-rox.—On Monday the 10th March, we experienced the most terrible snow- storm that has ever been remembered. The storm began in the evening and continued all night. The roads are all blocked up with the banks of snow in every direction. ‘he houses and barns that had stood all the other griles that came since last fall, that night gave way. One poor man had his house completely destroy- ed,—the roof was blown away and the oliiiuney thrown down ; his two neighbors had their barns shattered to pieces; their rain was car- ried away in every direction by t e wind. We also hear of three other barns having been de- stroyed on the North shore : and a poor widow in the back settlement had a ne burn com- letel carried away and broken to pieces. ear t ose are but few losses that were occasi- oned by this tremendous gale.—I hope that no unfortunate person attempted going home that night after having taken an extra glass—if so, we fear the consequence. The proposition was made to the Sound Dues Conference, and the roposal is said to have been accepted at once by the Russian represen- tntives Ten orborski, without any reserve, although nssia’s share would amount to about one th rd of the whole. It is represented that this pro_iect met with so much favor with the representatives assembled, as to lead to the expectation of its being adopted by the various Government. 'l'niinr.—A severe storm occurred at Con- stantinople on the 22nd alt. On the Bosphorus and in the Golden Horn the vessels were driven from their moorings, and runniifg into each other in the greatest contusion. AN I-IXACTING HiJ.snrr.~ii.—-\Vychci~ly, the comedian married a girl of eighteen when he was verging on eighty. Shortly after, Providence was pleased, in its mercy to the young woman, to call the old man to another and ii better world. But ere he took his final departure from this world, be summoned his young wife to his bedside, mid announced to her, that he was dying; " whereupon she wept bitterly. Wyclierly lifted liimsclfup in the bed, and gazing with tender emotion on his weeping wife, said: "My dearest love, I have ii solemn pro- mise to exact from you before I quit your side forever here below. Will you assure me, my wishes will be attended to by you, however great the sacrifice you will be cal- led on to make. " Horrid ideas of suttecs, of poor Indian pyres, with the bodies of their diseased lords and masters, flushed across the brain of the poor woman. VVith n convulsive effort and a desperate resolution, she gasped out an assurance that his commands, how- ever dreadful they might bs, should be obe e . Then, V\'ycherly, with a ghastly smile, said, in a low and solemn voice: “ My beloved \|ll‘.‘-. the parting request I have to make of _\’ -o is—that wicri any gone, (here the poor women sohbed and cried most VOll0llIlr.il‘_‘-',) when I am in my cold gravc——(Mi-.s ‘.3 ycherly tore her hair,) when I run laid low-—(the isconsolete widow roar:-.d with grief,)—when I am no longer a heavy burden and a tie on yoii— (‘ Oh, for Heaven's asks, what am I to do? howled Mrs. .)—I command you, my dear young wife—('yes, y-e-s, love,’ sob- bed Mrs. \V.)—oi pain of incurring my malediction-—(y-e-s, d-e-ii-r’ gioaned the horror-stricken wife)-never to marry an old man!"
