Reed, from Baltimore for Portiand, with a cargo of coal. The schooner struck the Talla- poosa’s side and crushed it in so that she ; sunk in ten minutes. The disaster occurred three miles northeast of Oak Bluffs, and the | Tallapoose now lies on what is known as | Squash Meadow flat, with only her smoke stuck and topmasts out of water. Le Temps believes France has no idea of blockading the open ports of China. If found neccesary, it says those will be chosen that will least interefere with national commerce. Le Temps calls attention to the absence of an actual declaration of war. A despatch to the Times from Foo Chow says that French ships have been forbidden to enter Takn Roadstead ; 17,000 rifles and a quantity of dynamite and gun cotton have been landed. Masked batteries are being erected here. The Times’ Hong Kong despatch says the French residents are leaving the city. Two thousand French soldiers are moment- avily expected to arrive from Tonquin. rr A Fatal Aecident. Monrreat, Aug. 22. At Henrysburg, on Wednesday, a lamp exploded, at Michael Lynch’s house, near Thomas Lynch’s bed. His brother John ran to extinguish the flames, but his own clothes caught fire, and he sustained fatal injuries. rr Roasted Alive. Montreal, Aug. 22. At Petrolia, Ont., while some children were lighting a bonfire, the clothes of a boy named McDonald caught fire and he was roasted alive. Poisoned. SHELBYVILLE, [Np., Aug. 22. A whole family residing near here were poisoned by arsenic being used instead of baking powder. Three are not expected to recover; one—a child—has died and four are very ill. Cholera. M. Anderson, a horse-back rider, began at the baseball park, in Chicago,on the 18th inst. The bicyclists met and deteated Anderson in a similar match at San Francisco last April, by a short distance. The conditions of the match are that Anderson shall ride 15 horses against the combined score of the bicyclists, the latter to ride alternately every half hour for 12 hours daily. In the early years of his residence in this country he resided at Georgetown, wheve he taught school, and subsequently at Lower Montague.
