Ban Anne Will the infinitely wise individual who chose to put Anne of Green Gables on our car license plates please stand up. Now could the entire student body of UPEI laugh hysterically at this person. Some people don’t care what appears on their license plates because it’s really not that important an issue - until someone chooses a design that is bound to annoy people. There are many reasons why a likeness of Anne Shirley, a person who does not really exist, should not appear on the license plate of the province of Prince Edward Island. The first reason is that of good taste. The redesigned license plate looks like something that you might find in an Anne of Green Gables gift shop. It’s not something that the Depart- ment of Motor Vehicles should be issuing. The purpose ofa license plate is not to be an advertisement or promotion. License plates should be so nondescript that we shouldn’t even notice them, let alone, be repulsed by them. The second problem is the idea of having a figure from the arts scene forced upon our whole society. Not everyone in this province has been caught up in the whole ‘‘Anne-o- rama’’: in fact, many people have been repulsed by the over- commercialization of this L.M. Montgomery creation. Could you imagine going to Tennessee and seeing the likenessof - Elvis on every license plate, or a similar experience with the Mona Lisa in France? I don’t think so, even though they are both more widely known than Anne. It states the facts and gives our provincial emblem in a nice shade of green. If it must be changed, why a picture? Why can’t we follow the classy examples put forth by Ontario or Quebec? The provincial emblem, the province name, and a short little statement adorn both of these decals. There is also no reason why we cannot choose another picture which follows more closely the good taste of our Nova Scotian neighbours, who have a picture of the Bluenose on their plates. At least the Bluenose actually exists and it is possible to obtain an actual picture of it. The X-Press would like to open this up to you, the student body. I’m sure that many of you have excellent ideas of what you would like to see on our license plates. If you have an idea you can either draw it yourself or write it down and drop it off at the newspaper office. If it passes certain restrictions (non-pornographic) we’ll publish it in an upcoming issue. Just imagine it. It’s ahot summer day and you’ re stuck in traffic at about four o’clock in the afternoon. You look ahead as the traffic crawls forward, your eyes glued to that stupid picture in front of you. You look at the car in the next lane and it’s gotit too!
